Why does marble skin in a sculpture look warm and almost translucent?

Light entering marble is not reflected at once but scatters among the crystal grains for a few millimetres before diffusing back out — subsurface scattering. That softens the shading and lets edges glow faintly, mimicking the optics of real skin.

Why has Van Gogh's bright yellow slowly turned brown over a century?

Van Gogh used chrome yellow (lead chromate), a pigment chemically unstable under light. Photochemical reactions driven by visible and UV light reduce chromium from Cr(VI) toward Cr(III) and alter the crystal form, shifting the bright yellow toward dull brown and olive tones. This degradation is why some of his sunflowers and fields have darkened over the past century.

Why does mixing paint darken it while mixing screen light brightens it?

Paints mix subtractively: each pigment absorbs some wavelengths, so combining them absorbs an ever wider band and reflects less light. Screens mix additively: red, green and blue light add up, so more energy reaches the eye and all three together look white.

Why isn't a longer reverberation time always better in a concert hall?

Reverberation adds warmth, but too much lets successive notes mask each other, blurring speech and fast passages. Symphony halls usually aim for 1.8–2.2 s, opera houses less, lecture rooms about 0.8 s, tuned with absorbers and diffusers.

What geometry underlies the one-point perspective of Renaissance painters?

The eye receives a central projection of a three-dimensional scene, in which parallel lines converge on a single vanishing point. Treating the canvas as a plane slicing the bundle of sight lines, the painter sizes objects by projective geometry so the image matches real vision.

Why do sunset photos never look as stunning as the real thing?

The eye spans an enormous range of brightness and adapts locally, so it sees both a glowing sky and dark silhouettes at once. A camera sensor's dynamic range is far narrower, so without bracketing or HDR merging the highlights blow out and the shadows go black.

Why do museums strictly control humidity and light levels around oil paintings?

Oil paintings are built from organic binders and layered paint that absorb and release moisture; humidity swings make them expand and contract, risking cracking and paint loss. Light—especially UV—drives fading and chemical breakdown of pigments and varnish, so illuminance is kept low and UV is filtered. Controlling both slows the slow chemistry of decay.

Blue pigment was once priceless — so why does a blue morpho need no pigment at all?

Its colour is structural: nanoscale multilayers on the scales make reflections of one wavelength interfere constructively while others cancel. Because the hue comes from geometry rather than chemistry it never fades, and it shifts with viewing angle.
