How does gravitational lensing work?

General relativity says a massive body bends light from behind it, magnifying and distorting the background source into arcs or multiple images. Einstein gave the deflection formula in 1915 and discussed lensing in 1936; Schneider et al. later wrote the standard text.

Can a black hole slowly evaporate?

Hawking radiation says quantum fluctuations at the horizon can let one of a virtual pair fall in while the other escapes, effectively costing the hole energy and mass. For stellar black holes this is negligibly slow; only tiny ones would visibly shrink.

Without flying there, how do astronomers see planets beyond our Solar System?

Why does the Chandrasekhar limit (about 1.4 solar masses) decide whether a white dwarf collapses further into a neutron star or black hole?

A white dwarf is supported by electron degeneracy pressure against gravity. Chandrasekhar showed that beyond about 1.4 solar masses this pressure can no longer hold, and the star collapses further. This limit is the key boundary in stellar fate, deciding the end state of stars of different masses.

How dense is a white dwarf, and why would a spoonful weigh a shocking amount?

A white dwarf, supported by electron degeneracy pressure after its fusion ends, crams about a solar mass into an Earth-sized ball, reaching roughly a tonne per cubic centimeter. It stops collapsing because electrons obey the Pauli exclusion principle and cannot share a quantum state, generating a quantum pressure that balances gravity. A single spoonful brought to Earth would weigh about a tonne — no ordinary container could hold it.

How do experiments like DAMA and LUX search for dark matter particles?

If dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), they should stream through Earth like ghosts and occasionally bounce off an atomic nucleus, leaving a tiny energy signal. Italy's DAMA experiment claimed an annual modulation in sodium-iodide crystals, linked to Earth's direction of travel around the Sun; the US-led LUX experiment buried a liquid-xenon detector deep underground and used photomultipliers to catch rare events. LUX found no credible signal, disagreeing with DAMA — one of the central puzzles in dark matter research today.

Why are the tiny temperature fluctuations—only one part in 100,000—in the cosmic microwave background so crucial for forming galaxies?

These fluctuations are imprints of slightly denser and thinner regions in the early universe; gravity amplifies the denser spots, letting matter clump together. The Planck satellite mapped their statistics, matching inflation predictions closely, and these seeds grew into galaxies and clusters. Without them the universe would be too smooth to form structure.

What evidence convinces scientists that invisible dark matter exists?

Three lines of evidence stand out. First, galaxy rotation curves: stars at a galaxy's edge orbit faster than expected, implying hidden mass. Second, galaxies in clusters move too fast and lens background light too strongly for visible matter alone. Third, the ripples in the cosmic microwave background match predictions that include dark matter. It accounts for about 85% of all matter, yet it emits no light and barely touches electromagnetism — it has never been directly detected.

Where are elements heavier than iron—gold, uranium, etc.—forged?

Ordinary stellar fusion stops stably at iron; heavier elements form mainly in neutron-star mergers or certain supernovae via the rapid neutron-capture process (r-process), where nuclei are bombarded with neutrons and later β-decay into heavy elements. In 2017 LIGO/Virgo caught the neutron-star merger GW170817 with telescope signatures of gold and other heavy elements, directly confirming this site.

Why is the expansion of the universe speeding up, and what is dark energy?

In 1998 two teams used type Ia supernovae to gauge distances and found distant galaxies dimmer than expected — they are receding faster than a steadily expanding universe would predict. Expansion is accelerating, not slowing under gravity. The driver is a mysterious energy with negative pressure, named dark energy, making up about 68% of the universe. It could be Einstein's cosmological constant or an evolving field — one of physics' biggest open mysteries.

Why do neutron stars spin so fast, and where do the lighthouse-like pulsars come from?

When a star collapses into a neutron star, its radius shrinks from millions of kilometers to about ten, and conservation of angular momentum spins it up to hundreds of revolutions per second. Its magnetic field is extreme, and with the magnetic poles tilted from the spin axis, the radio beams sweep around like a lighthouse; each pass across Earth delivers a regular pulse — a pulsar. When the first was found in 1967, its regularity briefly made it suspect as an alien signal.

What is the GZK cutoff in the cosmic-ray spectrum, and why does it limit ultra-high-energy cosmic rays coming from distant sources?

Above about 5×10^19 eV, a proton collides with cosmic microwave background photons and undergoes photopion production through the Δ+ resonance, losing roughly 20% of its energy per interaction. Its energy-loss length then shrinks to a few tens of megaparsecs, so ultra-high-energy particles from more distant sources cannot reach Earth at such energies and the top of the spectrum is cut off. Measurements at the HiRes and Pierre Auger Observatory both confirm this suppression.

Why does the Sun have sunspots, and can they affect Earth?

The Sun's strong magnetic fields suppress convection in local patches, leaving them about a thousand degrees cooler than their surroundings, so they appear dark. Sunspot numbers rise and fall on an about-11-year cycle. In active periods the Sun also flares and flings coronal mass ejections whose charged particles slam into Earth's magnetic field, driving geomagnetic storms that can disturb satellites and power grids — and brighten the auroras.

With so many stars in the universe, why is the night sky mostly dark instead of brightly lit by starlight?

This is Olbers' paradox. Harrison's analysis shows the main reason is that both the universe and its stars have finite ages: we can only receive starlight emitted within a finite region and time, and that light is far too little to fill the sky. Redshift from cosmic expansion dilutes distant starlight further, but it is a secondary effect rather than the root cause. A dark night sky is thus direct evidence that the universe had a beginning and is evolving.

What evidence makes astronomers say most matter in the universe is invisible 'dark matter'?

Several independent lines point to it: galaxy rotation speeds stay high at the edges (Zwicky first noted this in the Coma Cluster in 1933); colliding clusters like the Bullet Cluster show mass detached from luminous matter; and CMB fluctuations require about five times more dark than ordinary matter. It emits no light and barely interacts, revealing itself only by gravity, and its particle nature remains unknown.

Why do some stars die in a violent explosion while others quietly fade out?

A star's fate is set by its mass. A modest star like the Sun, out of fuel, slowly sheds its outer layers into a planetary nebula and shrinks to a white dwarf; stars beyond roughly 8 solar masses end with a collapsing core and a supernova, leaving a neutron star; only the true giants (generally more than about 25 solar masses) collapse into black holes. Black holes are the fate of a rare minority.

Hubble found in 1929 that distant galaxies' redshifts (recession speeds) grow in proportion to their distance: v = H₀·d. The farther away, the faster it recedes, showing space itself is stretching rather than galaxies flying through fixed space. The constant H₀ (Hubble constant) is now pinned down by Planck and local measurements, serving as cosmology's distance ruler.

What is a black hole, and why can even light not escape?

How can the static snow of a television include the afterglow of the Big Bang?

About 380,000 years after the Big Bang the universe cooled enough for atoms to form, so photons stopped bouncing off free electrons and streamed freely; expansion has since stretched them to roughly one-millimeter microwaves that fill all of space — the cosmic microwave background. In 1964 two Bell Labs engineers stumbled on that microwave noise while testing equipment. Satellites have mapped its faint temperature ripples to infer the universe's age and composition.

How was the cosmic microwave background discovered, and why does it matter so much?

In 1965, Penzias and Wilson were debugging a radio antenna when they found an irreducible faint hiss no matter which way the antenna pointed. It turned out to be the cosmic microwave background — the afterglow left when the universe cooled enough, about 380,000 years after the Big Bang, for light to travel freely. This radiation fills the sky uniformly at about 2.7 kelvin, the strongest evidence for the Big Bang, and earned the pair the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Why do stars twinkle while planets appear to shine steadily?

As starlight crosses the atmosphere, pockets of air with shifting density refract it, jiggling the image and making brightness flicker. Stars are so distant that they appear as mere points, so any tiny refraction wobbles the whole point; planets are close enough to show a small disk, and the perturbations of different parts average out, so they twinkle far less. That's exactly why astronomers send telescopes into space — to rise above the atmosphere.

How were gravitational waves detected?

In 2015, the US-based LIGO detected gravitational waves for the first time, from the merger of two black holes. Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime itself, stretching and squeezing distances as they pass. LIGO's laser interferometer with two 4-kilometer arms amplified that stretch until it was measurable — the change was about a thousand times smaller than a proton's diameter. The discovery confirmed Einstein's century-old prediction and opened a new window on the universe.

How does the light of a distant galaxy get bent—even into an 'Einstein ring'—by a massive object in front of it?

General relativity says mass curves spacetime, and light follows that curved spacetime, so it is deflected and focused by a foreground object. When the source, lens, and Earth are nearly aligned, the background galaxy's image is stretched into a ring—the Einstein ring. It both magnifies distant objects and weighs foreground galaxies.

The incoming hadron collides with an air nucleus and produces many pions: neutral pions decay almost instantly into two gamma photons, opening an electromagnetic branch that doubles repeatedly through alternating bremsstrahlung and pair production, while charged pions either collide further or decay into muons. Hadronic and electromagnetic branches split again and again; particle numbers grow exponentially while the mean energy per generation drops until the atmosphere absorbs the cascade. Long-lived, highly penetrating muons form the dominant ground-level signal, spread sideways by multiple scattering.

Why does the Moon regularly change shape—sometimes a thin crescent, sometimes a full disk?

The changing shape is not the Moon lighting up and dimming: it only reflects sunlight, and the Sun always lights one half of it. The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle Earth, so during that time the share of the lit half facing Earth keeps changing — giving the cycle from new moon to first quarter, full moon and last quarter. The regularity comes from that orbital period; a full run of phases takes about 29.5 days rather than 27.3, because Earth advances along its own orbit while the Moon circles it, so the Moon must travel an extra arc to meet the same Sun–Earth–Moon angle again.

Why does the Moon show phases?

All the moonlight we see is reflected sunlight; the Moon gives off none of its own. The Sun always lights half of the Moon, and as the Moon orbits Earth the share of that lit half facing us goes from out of sight, to a thin crescent, to the whole disk — new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter — taking about 29.5 days, which is why a lunar month is that long. The phases are not Earth's shadow falling on the Moon: that is a lunar eclipse, and it happens only at full moon, when Sun, Earth and Moon sit almost on one line.

Why do planets orbit the Sun in ellipses rather than perfect circles?

Analyzing Tycho's observations, Kepler found in 1609 that planetary orbits are ellipses with the Sun at one focus—his first law. Newton later showed from gravity's inverse-square law that orbits are naturally conic sections (ellipse, parabola, or hyperbola), with a perfect circle only a special case when the speed exactly matches.
