Why does fast charging promote 'lithium dendrites' that can pierce the separator and short the cell?

Too-fast charging leaves lithium no time to embed evenly, so it plates as needle-like crystals (dendrites). They can grow sharp enough to pierce the separator and touch the other electrode, causing an internal short or fire.

Why can solid-state batteries chase both higher energy and better safety by replacing liquid electrolyte with a solid?

Liquid electrolyte is flammable and can grow lithium dendrites that pierce the separator. A stable solid electrolyte allows a high-energy lithium-metal anode while being non-flammable and short-resistant — stronger and safer.

How do supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries differ — what makes one fast and the other slow?

Batteries move ions through slow chemical reactions — lots of stored energy but slow. Supercapacitors just pile charge on electrode surfaces — nearly instant, but less energy. Caps are for quick bursts, batteries for lasting power.

Why can't disposable batteries be recharged like a phone battery?

Disposable cells use largely one-way reactions; after discharge the products scatter and the structure changes, so they can't be reversed. Rechargeables pick reactions that happily run both ways.

How does a chemical reaction actually create the voltage between a battery's terminals?

The two electrode materials differ in how strongly they hold electrons: one readily gives them up (anode), the other grabs them (cathode). That chemical potential difference 'pushes' electrons, giving the measured voltage.

How exactly do lithium ions 'move house' while a battery charges?

While charging, lithium ions leave the cathode, cross the electrolyte and separator, and lodge in the anode's layered structure; discharging reverses the trip, and their passage through the external circuit drives current.

Why does an old battery sometimes bulge?

The cell's chemistry slowly makes a little gas; as it builds up, the casing swells — like a balloon quietly overinflated.

Why does a phone battery show full charge in winter yet shut off suddenly?

Cold slows the cell's chemistry so lithium ions move sluggishly and the voltage sags. The indicator is calibrated for room temperature, so it looks full, yet under load the voltage drops below the shutoff point.
