How can a quasicrystal be ordered yet non-periodic?

Why is the quantum Hall effect so precise?

At very low temperature and strong field, the Hall resistance of a two-dimensional electron gas is quantized as h/(ne²), depending only on fundamental constants. von Klitzing discovered these plateaus in 1980, and they now define the ohm precisely.

How can a superconductor carry current with zero resistance — what's going on?

In 1911 Kamerlingh Onnes found mercury's resistance vanishes abruptly at 4.2 K — a purely quantum phenomenon. The 1957 BCS theory explains it: at low temperatures electrons pair up through lattice vibrations (phonons) into Cooper pairs, which flow as one coherent quantum state without scattering off atoms, so resistance drops to exactly zero. Superconductors also expel magnetic field lines (the Meissner effect), which levitates maglev trains.

Does Anderson localization describe electrons getting 'lost' among impurities?

Essentially yes: in sufficiently strong disorder (e.g., randomly placed impurity potentials), electron waves that could roam instead get repeatedly scattered and interfere, becoming trapped in a tiny region and unable to conduct—a metal behaving like an insulator. Anderson predicted this in 1958 with a disordered-lattice model, showing disorder alone can localize, earning the 1977 Nobel Prize.

What makes laser light different from ordinary light, and why is it so bright and straight?

Ordinary light mixes many frequencies and directions, while a laser works by stimulated emission: a photon passing an excited atom triggers an identical photon — same frequency, phase, and direction — and the cascade multiplies. An optical cavity bounces the light back and forth between mirrors, amplifying it into a highly coherent, well-collimated beam. Such a beam can be focused to a tiny spot, concentrating energy so tightly that it cuts steel, performs surgery, and carries signals through optical fibers.

Why is graphene called a 'wonder material,' and what is special about it?

Graphene is a single atomic layer of carbon in a honeycomb lattice where electrons move like massless particles at very high speed (Dirac cones), giving superb conductivity, heat transport, and remarkable strength. Nearly transparent yet stronger than steel, with mobility far above silicon. Geim and Novoselov isolated it with sticky tape in 2004, winning the 2010 Nobel Prize and launching 2D-materials research.

How does the liquid crystal inside an LCD display produce images?

Liquid-crystal molecules are rod-shaped, partway between liquid and solid, and reorient under an electric field. Each pixel sandwiches a liquid-crystal layer between crossed polarizers: incoming light is first polarized, then travels through the crystal. Without a field the layer rotates the polarization by 90° and light passes the second polarizer; with a field the molecules stand up, stop rotating the polarization, and the light is blocked. Controlling the voltage pixel by pixel tunes the transmitted intensity, and red-green-blue filters render color. Since the crystal emits no light, a backlight sits behind the panel.

How does the neutron spin echo technique evade the conventional trade-off between energy resolution and beam intensity in spectrometers?

Conventional spectrometers buy high resolution by narrowing the incident energy bandwidth at a heavy flux penalty. Spin echo instead uses the neutron spin as a built-in clock: strong precession fields before and after the sample produce Larmor phases that cancel exactly for elastic scattering, while inelastic events leave a net precession proportional to the energy transfer. Velocity spread then no longer spoils the resolution, which reaches sub-microelectronvolt levels, making nanosecond-scale slow relaxations, such as polymer-melt entanglement dynamics and protein domain motions, measurable.

Why is glass transparent while metal is opaque?

It comes down to whether electrons can absorb visible light. Metals swarm with nearly free electrons that respond to the light's electric field and instantly reflect it back, so metal is shiny and opaque. In glass the electrons are bound, and the energy gap where absorption happens lies in the ultraviolet; visible photons simply lack enough energy, pass straight through, and the glass looks transparent.

Why does a hospital MRI machine need a superconducting magnet?

MRI needs an extremely strong field, typically 1.5 to 3 tesla — tens of thousands of times Earth's magnetic field — to align hydrogen nuclei in the body, then reads their signals after a radio-frequency pulse. Stronger, steadier fields give sharper images. An ordinary electromagnet running that much current would generate enormous heat; a superconducting coil has zero resistance at low temperature and can sustain the large current with no loss. That is why hospital magnets are chilled to cryogenic temperatures with liquid helium.

What state of matter is the 'liquid crystal' inside an LCD?

Liquid crystals sit between liquid and crystal: the molecules flow yet keep orientational order, like a fluid that is 'lined up.' An electric field twists or tilts their arrangement, altering transmission of polarized light; with polarizers and color filters this controls each pixel's brightness and color. RCA and others developed twisted-nematic displays from the 1960s, making flat-panel displays mainstream.

Why are computer chips made of silicon rather than a better conductor like copper?

Because silicon is a semiconductor: pure silicon barely conducts, but doping it with a trace of impurities tunes its conductivity precisely. That enables diodes (one-way valves for current) and transistors (switches and amplifiers); etch billions onto a silicon wafer and you have a chip. Copper conducts better but can't be switched off — only silicon's controllable conductivity makes the on/off logic of computing possible.

How does a maglev train levitate above its track?

Shanghai's maglev train uses electromagnetic attraction: electromagnets under the car are pulled toward the track, and a control system continuously adjusts the current to hold the train about a centimeter above the rail. Superconducting maglev instead exploits the perfect diamagnetism of superconductors: superconducting coils carry a persistent current that creates a strong field, and currents induced in the track repel it, lifting the train. Because the coils have zero resistance, they hold huge currents without heating, keeping the levitation stable and efficient.

What lets electronic lighters, quartz watches and microphones convert between mechanical and electrical energy?

The piezoelectric effect: in crystals like quartz, squeezing distorts the lattice so charge centers separate, producing a voltage across the faces — and applying a voltage makes the crystal deform instead. Electronic lighters strike a crystal to fire tens of thousands of volts; quartz watches drive the crystal with alternating voltage so its stable vibration keeps time; microphones let sound waves press a crystal into an electrical signal. Piezoelectrics are therefore the heart of sensors and ultrasonic devices.

When carbon dioxide is taken close to its critical point in temperature and pressure, the transparent fluid suddenly turns as turbid and white as milk. What causes this?

It is called critical opalescence. Near the critical point liquid and gas cease to differ, the compressibility diverges, and density fluctuations become correlated over macroscopic distances. Clusters of fluctuation comparable in size to visible wavelengths scatter light strongly in all directions, turning the fluid milky white. Such continuous transitions are universal: the critical behavior depends only on spatial dimension and order-parameter symmetry, which is how renormalization-group theory accounts for the shared critical exponents of very different systems.
