Why does a gentle blow across a bottle sing, while a hard blow over a thin edge 'screams' (edge tone)?

The jet is sliced by the edge and flips side to side periodically, slapping the air like a whistle. The harder the blow, the higher the oscillation frequency and the shriller the tone — the edge tone that drives many wind instruments.

Why does plucking a string fixed at one end show a clear standing wave only at certain frequencies?

The wave reflects at the fixed end and overlaps the incoming one. Only when the length is an integer multiple of a half-wavelength do they reinforce everywhere, forming a non-traveling standing wave; other frequencies cancel out and show no clear shape.

During spin-dry, why do clothes stay stuck to the drum instead of falling?

Spinning fast, the clothes want to fly straight out but the drum wall holds them in, pressing them against it by 'centrifugal' effect. The wall supplies the inward force, so clothes ride the wall while water is flung out through the holes.

Why does a spinning umbrella fling water in a circle instead of straight down?

A spinning umbrella gives droplets tangential speed; once they leave the rim they want to fly off along the tangent while gravity pulls them down, combining into an arcing fling — looking like a spray ring.

When a fast-spinning top is pushed to fall, it instead 'veers' around — what effect is this?

It's precession. A spinning top carries angular momentum; the external torque doesn't topple it directly but makes that momentum direction sweep around, so the top doesn't fall — it leans and circles.

Why can butterfly wings, blue morphos and soap films show rainbow colors with no pigment?

They use structural color: layers finer than a light wavelength make different colors reinforce or cancel by interference, shifting with viewing angle. It's not dye but light playing with thin structures.

Why are bubbles usually round — how does surface tension 'choose' the shape?

Surface tension minimizes the film's area; for a fixed amount of gas the sphere has the smallest area and lowest energy. So undisturbed, a bubble naturally pulls itself into a round ball.

Why does blowing across an empty bottle's mouth make it 'hum'?

The airstream is sliced by the rim into puffs that bounce inside, making the air column vibrate like an invisible spring at its own frequency, humming away.

Why does tossing a stone into water send up a string of bubbles?

The stone drags air down with it; water squeezes that air back up, and on the way it forms a trail of little bubbles that pop out at the surface.

Two identical tuning forks nearby — strike one and the other rings too. How does it 'steal' the energy?

The struck fork sends sound at its natural frequency; the nearby identical fork is 'pushed' by those matching waves into vibrating too — resonance. Energy rides the air wave across and sets the other ringing.

Why does a soap bubble pop at a touch, yet two bubbles merge into one when they meet?

The film is as thin as a shadow and breaks where a finger's dirt or dryness touches it. When two bubbles meet, their films join and surface tension shrinks them into one bigger, lower-energy bubble.
