Why can high pressure turn an insulator metallic — even turning hydrogen into 'metallic hydrogen'?

Pressure squeezes atoms closer, broadening bands until the valence and conduction bands overlap so electrons flow freely — an insulator becomes a metal. Theory predicts that extreme pressure dissociates hydrogen molecules into a metallic covalent network: metallic hydrogen.

Why does Earth's core pressure keep iron solid despite temperatures above iron's melting point?

The melting point rises with pressure. At Earth's core (~3.6 million atm) the melting point of iron is pushed above the actual temperature, so iron is squeezed into a solid inner core even though it would melt at that heat under low pressure.

How does a diamond anvil cell use two tiny diamonds to reach Earth's-core pressures?

A sample is squeezed between the tips of two diamonds and pressed hard. Diamond is ultra-hard and the tips are tiny, so force concentrates on a minuscule area, driving pressure to millions of atmospheres — enough to mimic Earth's core.

The deeper you dive, the more your ears hurt — about how much pressure per 10 meters down?

Roughly every 10 meters of water adds one atmosphere, so at 10 m you feel about 2 atm (including the 1 from air), and 4 atm at 30 m. The air spaces in your ears get squeezed, which hurts.
