Why does twelve-tone equal temperament split an octave into 12 equal steps, leaving every instrument 'slightly' off?
Just intonation's sweetest intervals need rational frequency ratios (e.g. 3:2), but to sound good in every key you compromise by multiplying by one equal factor per semitone. So except the octave, intervals drift slightly from the ideal ratios — the price of free modulation.

Why do tuners deliberately stretch a piano's treble up and bass down?
Real strings have stiffness, so their overtones sit slightly above exact integer multiples — inharmonicity. Since the ear judges octaves by matching overtones, tuning to those partials naturally stretches the treble upward and the bass downward.

Pressing a string changes its effective length — why can one string produce a whole scale?
A finger shortens the vibrating segment, raising frequency inversely with length, so one string yields many notes. To hit equal-temperament pitches, the stopping points shift by fixed ratios — the very logic behind frets and fingerboard spacing.

Why does a violin need a body and two f-holes?
A thin string moves almost no air on its own. The bridge passes its vibration to the top plate, which drives the whole box and the air inside, coupling the energy into the room; the f-holes let the internal air resonate and reinforce the low notes.

Why can a wind player 'overblow' to get a higher octave without pressing keys?
The air column normally vibrates at its fundamental; blowing harder excites the second harmonic (double the frequency), heard as an octave up. It's the same air column gaining one more node, jumping the pitch up.

Why does tapping one end of a long tube sound deeper than tapping a short one?
A longer air column fits a longer half-wavelength, lowering the fundamental and the tone. A short tube's column gives a higher fundamental, so it sounds brighter and thinner.

Why do two identical-model guitars still sound different on the same note?
Two same-model guitars differ in timbre, not pitch: timbre is set by the relative strengths of the overtones (the overtone spectrum) and how each body resonates. Even with the same model, tiny differences in wood, construction, hardware, and setup shift those resonances, giving the same note a different mix of frequencies and decay. That's why the ear can still tell two instruments apart.

Why do wind instruments play flat in the cold?
Their pitch comes from standing waves in the air column, and that frequency scales with the speed of sound. Sound slows by roughly 0.6 m/s per degree of cooling, so the pitch sags — which is why players warm the instrument up first.

Why does tightening a guitar string raise its pitch?
A string's fundamental frequency rises with the square root of tension and falls with length and mass per unit length. Tightening it makes the wave travel faster, so it vibrates more times per second.

Why are some piano strings long and thick while others are short and thin?

Why does the same tune sound totally different on piano versus violin?
Pitch comes from the fundamental, but instruments also emit many integer-multiple overtones with different strengths — that's timbre. Piano and violin have different overtone recipes, so even on the same note we tell them apart by ear.

Why does tapping a glass rim sound lower when it holds more water?
The glass and water vibrate together; more water means more mass to move, so it vibrates slower and sounds lower. An empty glass is light, vibrates fast and sounds higher.
