Why does a double pendulum appear random and become unpredictable over time?
The double pendulum is a classic chaotic system with exponential sensitivity to initial conditions—a mechanical version of the butterfly effect. Two setups differing by one hundred-thousandth of a degree diverge completely within seconds. Though governed by deterministic Lagrange equations, it has no analytic periodic solution, so its long-term behavior is essentially unpredictable.

Why does stirring coffee create messy turbulence?
When flow is fast and viscosity relatively weak, it goes unstable and breaks into nested swirls of many sizes—turbulence. Highly nonlinear and hard to predict exactly, it is a famous hard problem in classical physics.

What does the butterfly effect mean in physics?
It means extreme sensitivity to initial conditions in a chaotic system: a tiny difference is amplified exponentially, making long-term behavior unpredictable. It is nonlinear dynamics, not mysticism.

What is a fractal, and why is a snowflake edge one?
A fractal is a shape self-similar at every scale, with detail repeating at different sizes and often a non-integer dimension. Snowflakes and coastlines keep similar bumps when magnified—classic fractals.
