How does a tall tree lift water from roots to its crown tens of meters up?

Leaf transpiration pulls a negative pressure; cohesion between water molecules and adhesion to vessel walls keep a continuous column rising like a long straw.

Why do cats often land on their feet after a fall?

Cats use the righting reflex: bending lets front and rear twist oppositely while total angular momentum stays zero, so they orient feet-down without spinning overall.

Why does blood mostly flow smoothly in vessels rather than turbulently?

Blood flows smoothly because viscosity has the upper hand here. The Reynolds number compares the two competing effects: the narrower the vessel, the slower the flow and the thicker the blood, the lower it is, and the flow organises itself into laminar layers sliding parallel to one another. Since most vessels are narrow and slow, laminar flow is the norm. Two exceptions matter: at a valve orifice or a narrowing the local speed jumps, the Reynolds number passes its critical threshold and turbulence follows, and a murmur heard on auscultation is exactly that; while at capillary scale red cells are comparable in size to the vessel, so the continuum assumption begins to fail as well.

Polar bear fur is actually transparent hollow tubes; why do we see it as white?

The hollow hairs scatter all colors of light together into white, while the trapped air layer insulates, making the bear look white and stay warm.

Why does a dragonfly wing have a small dark spot near its tip?

The pterostigma adds local mass, shifting the center of mass and damping, which suppresses resonant flutter at high flapping speeds.

Why aren't deep-sea fish crushed by enormous water pressure?

They have no large air spaces; their body fluids match the surrounding pressure, so inside and outside balance and there is no net crushing force.

Does flying in a V formation really save birds energy?

The leading bird's wingtip makes an upwash; followers riding it get free lift, so the flock flies more efficiently as a team.

Why is the human eye most sensitive to green light?

Cone cells peak near 555 nm yellow-green, and sunlight is richest in visible green, so the eye evolved to be keenest where light is abundant.

Why do bats use ultrasound rather than audible sound to 'see'?

Shorter wavelengths resolve smaller objects; ultrasound pinpoints tiny insects and avoids low-frequency noise, while echo timing gives distance.

How do two ears tell which side a sound comes from?

Sound reaches the nearer ear first (time difference) and louder (level difference); the brain combines both to locate the direction.

Bees look too heavy for their small wings; why can they still fly?

Bees flap rapidly to create unsteady leading-edge vortices, generating far more lift than a fixed-wing estimate predicts; the simple model fails, not the physics.

There is a blind spot in your eye; why don't you see a hole?

Where the optic nerve leaves, there are no receptors, but the two eyes compensate and the brain fills the gap using surrounding information.

Why do muscles get warm when you strain to lift something?
