Why does a tokamak use strong magnetic fields to cage 100-million-degree fusion plasma in a vacuum?
No material could touch 100-million-degree plasma without vaporizing, so a toroidal field makes charged particles spiral along field lines and stay centered. Vacuum keeps residual gas from cooling the plasma on contact.

What's the difference between 'magnetic' and 'inertial' confinement fusion?
Magnetic confinement (tokamak) holds a tenuous plasma with fields for a long time; inertial confinement (laser ignition) compresses a tiny pellet in a billionth of a second so fusion happens before it can fly apart. One 'holds', the other 'squeezes'.

In a lightning flash, what state does the air actually turn into?
The huge electric field ionizes air molecules, freeing charges that race around, turning the air into a hot plasma channel. That glowing, searing plasma is the lightning we see.

Both star interiors and neon signs contain plasma — why do their temperatures differ by hundreds of millions of degrees?
Plasma only needs freed electrons, with no minimum temperature. A neon sign is mildly ionized and stays cool; a star is fully ionized by extreme temperature and pressure, hence blazing hot. Being plasma and being hot are separate questions.

Why does lab fusion need 100 million degrees, yet a hydrogen bomb ignites with chemical explosives?
A hydrogen bomb uses an atomic bomb's X-rays and shockwave to compress fuel to extreme density and temperature in an instant. Labs can't use a fission bomb as a lighter, so they must steadily heat tenuous plasma to 100 million degrees instead.

Why is plasma called the 'fourth state' of matter?
Heat or energize a gas enough and electrons rip free from atoms, leaving a mix of positive ions and free electrons — an electrified 'fog' unlike solid, liquid or gas, hence the fourth state.

Why does a neon sign's color depend on the gas inside?
Different gases emit different colors when their electrons drop from excited states: neon glows red, argon bluish-violet, and phosphors add more hues. Change the gas, change the color.

In a plasma ball, why do the electric filaments gather toward your finger when you touch it?
