Cesium or optical lattice clock — why might an optical clock beat cesium by a hundredfold?

A cesium clock ticks in the microwave range (~9 billion/s); an optical clock uses visible light, tens of thousands of times higher, so its 'hand' moves far finer. Trapping atoms in an optical lattice also quiets perturbations, shrinking the error.

How did Cavendish's torsion balance measure G and thereby 'weigh' the Earth?

He suspended a rod with small lead balls on a fine wire and placed large lead balls nearby. Their gravity twisted the rod minutely; from the twist angle he found G, and with surface gravity he inferred Earth's mass.

The kilogram is now defined with a Kibble balance — how does it link mass to Planck's constant?

A Kibble balance first balances gravitational force on a coil with magnetic force, then relates that to a voltage from the same coil in motion. This converts mass into electrical quantities tied to Planck's constant, now fixed exactly, defining the kilogram quantum-mechanically.

LIGO's interferometer has two 4-km arms — how can it measure length changes as tiny as a proton's diameter?

A passing gravitational wave slightly changes one arm's length versus the other. The laser bounces hundreds of times to amplify the difference, then the two beams interfere; a tiny arm-length change shifts the fringe pattern, revealing a stretch of one part in 10^21.

Why does LIGO use two perpendicular arms instead of one?

A gravitational wave stretches one direction while squeezing the perpendicular one. Two perpendicular arms reveal the 'one longer, one shorter' difference as a measurable fringe shift; a single arm couldn't separate stretch from compression.

What makes an atomic clock 'tick' — and why atoms instead of a pendulum?

Electrons in an atom jump between two levels, absorbing or emitting light of an extremely stable frequency — that frequency is the natural 'second hand'. It's far steadier than a pendulum affected by temperature and gravity, so the clock barely drifts for millions of years.

Why is a quartz watch far more accurate than a mechanical one — how does piezoelectric crystal act as a clock?

A quartz crystal oscillates at a very stable frequency (the piezoelectric effect), driven by electricity. The circuit counts those vibrations to keep seconds, far steadier than a spring-and-gear mechanical movement.

Why does more precise measurement demand vacuum, underground sites and extreme vibration isolation?

Air molecules jostle, the ground trembles, temperature makes things expand — any disturbance can drown the faint signal. Vacuum removes molecular hits, underground sites dodge noise, isolation tables filter vibration, letting the signal emerge.

Why is today's meter defined by light traveling a tiny time in vacuum?

The speed of light in vacuum is a fixed, exact value, so defining the meter as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 seconds is stable and identical everywhere — no physical ruler required.

Why do scientists say the 'second' is counted out by atoms?

Today one second is defined as a set number of vibrations of a certain atom — over nine billion. Atoms 'keep the beat' for us; count to that number and it's one second, more reliable than the Sun or a pendulum.
