Why does swimming a little deeper change drag so much?

Swimming right at the surface constantly generates waves, and this wave-making drag grows very steeply with speed; going slightly deeper reduces wave making but adds frontal and friction drag. Elite technique balances the two.

Why is a free diver at 100 metres not crushed?

Water is nearly incompressible, and about 60% of the human body is water. At 100 m the hydrostatic pressure is about 10 atmospheres, but a freediver equalizes the air spaces (lungs, sinuses, middle ears) so internal pressure matches the outside; the gas-filled cavities are compressed rather than crushed. Soft tissue, being mostly water, barely compresses, and bone and solid tissue tolerate the load. The real dangers are barotrauma from unequalized air spaces and nitrogen narcosis/hypoxia, not the external pressure physically crushing the body.

Do long jumpers really gain distance by swinging their arms in mid-air?

In the long jump, mid-air arm swings and leg tucks are counter-movements governed by angular-momentum conservation: swinging the upper body back lets the legs come forward, rotating the body into a landing posture before the feet hit. This does not alter the center-of-mass parabola—that follows projectile motion—but it optimizes the landing position and reduces lost distance from the heels crossing the line, gaining a few centimeters. So the swing helps, but by posture, not by magically adding range.

How does the carbon plate in a running shoe actually save energy?

The stiff plate plus resilient foam returns more of the energy stored at landing instead of wasting it in the foam. It also stiffens the forefoot so the toe joints do less negative work, effectively lengthening the foot's lever.

How does energy flow through a six-metre pole vault?

The run-up turns muscle energy into kinetic energy, the bending fibreglass pole stores it as elastic energy, and the recoil hands it back as the gravitational potential energy needed to clear the bar.

Why does a curling free kick in soccer or a curveball in baseball swerve sideways? Explain the mechanism in terms of the Magnus effect.

A spinning ball entrains nearby air through friction, so the relative rotation of the boundary layers differs on its two sides and the separation points shift: on one side the flow stays attached longer, moves faster and has lower pressure, while the other side behaves oppositely. The resulting pressure difference produces a lateral force perpendicular to the flight direction — the Magnus force — whose magnitude grows with spin rate and ball speed, bending the trajectory into a curve; reversing the spin bends it the other way.

A figure skater spins noticeably faster when pulling her arms in, and slows down again when extending them. Which conservation law explains this, and where does the extra kinetic energy come from?

With ice friction negligible, the skater's angular momentum about the vertical axis, L = Iω, is conserved. Drawing the arms in concentrates mass near the rotation axis, shrinking the moment of inertia I, so the angular velocity ω rises and the spin rate multiplies accordingly. Since rotational kinetic energy is E = Iω^2 = L^2/(2I), a smaller I means higher kinetic energy: the surplus comes from muscular work done against centrifugal pull. Extending the arms reverses the process — muscles do negative work and the kinetic energy drops back.

Why does a topspin table-tennis ball dive down after crossing the net?

Forward spin speeds the air over the top and slows it underneath, creating a pressure difference and a downward Magnus force. Added to gravity, it makes the ball drop unusually sharply.

Why do sprinters push off starting blocks instead of standing?

The blocks give a solid inclined surface against which the sprinter can push hard backwards, and the ground's reaction pushes him forward. The larger impulse over that short time produces a faster gain in speed.

Why does a figure skater spin faster the moment she pulls in her arms?

Her angular momentum stays nearly constant. Pulling the arms in brings mass closer to the axis, lowering the moment of inertia, so the rotation rate must rise to compensate.

Why must a weightlifter keep the bar close to the body?

The farther the bar drifts from the body, the longer the lever arm about the hips and spine, and the larger the required torque. Keeping it close minimises that lever arm, saving effort and protecting the back.
