How does hyperbolic discounting explain why we procrastinate despite knowing better?

People over-prefer near rewards and steeply devalue distant ones along a hyperbolic curve, not exponential. So immediate ease beats future gain, causing poor saving and skipped workouts; fixes shorten feedback distance via small goals and instant cues.

A widely cited study found Israeli judges' favorable parole rulings spiked after meal breaks and slid steadily as sessions wore on, which the authors attributed to decision fatigue. What does the study claim, and what are the methodological weak points of its evidence?

Claim: rulings run on a finite cognitive resource, so hours of weighing cases exhaust judges into the least-effort default of denying parole. Evidence: analyzing over a thousand hearings, Danziger and colleagues found favorable rulings surged after morning and lunch breaks and declined case by case. Weak points: dockets were not randomized, so case severity, counsel quality, and correlation between neighboring files could forge the rhythm; later large-scale reanalyses mostly failed to replicate it. The effect more likely reflects ordering artifacts than pure depletion, so it stands as a cautionary lead rather than settled fact.

Why did the once widely cited ego-depletion effect collapse to nearly zero in a preregistered replication spanning twenty-three laboratories?

Early effect sizes were likely inflated systematically, and any real effect is far smaller than first reported. Hagger's team coordinated over twenty laboratories and more than two thousand participants in a preregistered repetition of a unified classic self-control paradigm; the effect landed near zero, with confidence intervals excluding typical published magnitudes. Small samples, analytic flexibility, and publication bias are blamed for the inflation. Moderators like motivation and belief remain debated, yet treating willpower as one depletable fuel tank no longer rests on robust evidence.

What psychological basis underlies herding in financial markets?

Herding stems from social proof (others must know), loss aversion and aversion to uncertainty, leading individuals to abandon independent judgment. It amplifies bubbles and crashes, showing markets are not always rationally efficient.

Does the ultimatum game show we value fairness or just profit?

In the ultimatum game, responders often reject unfair splits even at personal cost, showing willingness to pay to punish unfairness. Economic behavior is driven by fairness norms and emotion, not pure self-interest.

Why can too many choices make us less happy?

Choice overload means too many options raise decision fatigue, inflate expectations and amplify regret, lowering satisfaction and action. Limiting options or offering guidance often pleases more than sheer abundance.

Someone who has spent a shopping trip carefully comparing products comes out less able to resist chocolate-chip cookies. Drawing on experimental evidence, what does the very act of choosing do to the self-control available afterward?

Choosing itself drains the resource that self-control runs on. Across a 2008 series of experiments, Vohs and colleagues found that people first made to trade off among many products kept their hands in ice water for less time and caved to sweets more easily, and shoppers tracked in a real mall fitted the same pattern. Every trade-off means suppressing the pull of rejected options while shouldering the risk of a bad pick, so after a few rounds little reserve remains for braking against the next temptation.

After making a long string of decisions, why do people become more likely to spend impulsively even when shopping was never the plan?

Self-control resources drained by earlier choices weaken the brake on buying impulses. Vohs and Faber had some participants first perform effortful self-control tasks; afterward, in simulated purchasing situations they reported stronger urges to buy, offered higher prices, and bought more items. Decision fatigue erodes inhibition of acquisition impulses and lets attention latch onto tempting products, so price evaluation gives way to immediate desire and impulsive spending climbs.

What is mental accounting, and why isn't money fungible to us?

People split money into mental accounts by source or purpose and treat them differently (freely spend a bonus, hoard salary). This irrational partitioning distorts spending and saving—a core behavioral-economics finding.

What is the endowment effect—why do we overvalue what we own?

Once we own something, we value it above what we would pay to acquire it, driven by loss aversion and ownership attachment. It explains why clearing clutter, returns and negotiations feel so hard at fair prices.

Why does any opening number in negotiation skew the final outcome?

This is anchoring: an initially presented irrelevant number becomes a reference point and people adjust insufficiently. Even knowing the number was random, offers pull the other side toward it, so openings should set anchors carefully.

What is status quo bias, and why do we resist change?

People favor the current option even when alternatives are better, due to decision costs, loss aversion and a sense of ownership. It appears as massive uptake of default choices and is used in policy design like organ-donation enrollment.
