How does the activation-synthesis hypothesis account for the generation of dreams, and where does it fundamentally diverge from the threat simulation theory?
Hobson and McCarley proposed in 1977 that dreams originate in spontaneous pontine firing during REM sleep; these signals ascend to activate the cortex and are then synthesized by the forebrain into seemingly coherent narratives, so dreams carry no purpose-built functional meaning. The threat simulation theory advanced by Revonsuo in 2000 instead claims that dreaming evolved to rehearse dangerous situations, allowing individuals to practice detection and avoidance responses without real risk. Their fundamental disagreement is whether dreams are merely by-products of neural activity or cognitive functions with adaptive value.

Why do people have nightmares?
Daytime stress and anxiety can resurface during sleep, especially in REM sleep, as frightening dreams; trauma (such as PTSD), certain medications, and alcohol can also trigger nightmares.

Why do we vividly "see" images in our dreams, yet can barely recall them after waking?
Dream imagery arises when the visual cortex is activated top-down by internal signals during REM sleep, after external input has been gated off by the brainstem. Recall fails because dorsolateral prefrontal activity is suppressed at this stage, crippling working memory and episodic encoding, while low noradrenaline levels hinder consolidating dreams into long-term memory. That is why dreams typically dissolve within minutes of waking.
