How do mastery and performance goals differ—how does orientation affect learning?
Mastery-goal students care 'did I learn,' risk errors and use deep strategies; performance-goal students care 'look smart,' avoid challenge and quit on failure. Classroom climate and grading steer which orientation forms.

What is educational acceleration, and how have decades of longitudinal data from the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) evaluated its effects on highly able students?
Founded by Julian Stanley at Johns Hopkins University in 1971 and continued from the early 1990s by Lubinski and Benbow at Vanderbilt, SMPY has followed thousands of adolescents scoring in the top 1% of ability. Its data link acceleration—grade skipping, early college entrance—to higher rates of doctorates, influential publications and patents, with no reliable evidence of impaired social-emotional adjustment. This challenges the traditional worry that acceleration harms socialization and supports matching curricula to cognitive readiness rather than age.

Why can testing before learning help—the pre-testing effect?
A hard but harmless pre-test before learning activates prior knowledge and flags gaps, making later study targeted (pre-testing effect). Even wrong answers lay groundwork via the retrieval attempt.

What is the zone of proximal development—how do scaffolds help?
Vygotsky's zone of proximal development is what a learner can do with help but not alone. Scaffolding is prompts and support withdrawn step by step, moving from dependence to independence.

How do the three desirable difficulties combine for efficient learning?
The evidence-backed recipe: self-test soon after learning (retrieval), space the reviews (spacing), and mix related problem types (interleaving). Stacking all three beats any alone for lasting mastery.

What is test anxiety—how does it sabotage performance?
High test anxiety hijacks working memory and sparks catastrophic thoughts and arousal, blocking retrieval of known material. Relief includes realistic practice, relaxation, and reappraising anxiety as a readiness signal.

Is pretend play just play—what does it do for cognition?
Pretend play (house) trains symbolic thought, perspective-taking and executive function: a block becomes a cake, practicing 'represent' and 'inhibit real.' It is early drill for abstraction and social skill.

Does praising smart vs effort differ in the long run?
Praising 'smart' makes kids fear failure and avoid challenge (fixed); praising effort/strategy encourages persistence (growth). Key is to praise the specific process, not talent or outcome.
