What is the adaptive value of mixed emotions?
Experiencing two opposite emotions at once, such as joy mixed with worry, is called mixed or ambivalent emotion, and it can prompt more careful information processing in complex decisions. Moderate ambivalence relates to more flexible thinking. Uniform single emotions are not always optimal.

How does emotional contagion happen?
Emotional contagion is when people unconsciously mimic others' expressions and postures and thereby 'catch' similar feelings, often via mirroring. It is especially noticeable in close relationships and service settings. Understanding it helps manage group moods.

What does the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions say?
Frederickson proposed that positive emotions briefly broaden a person's attention, thinking, and action repertoire, and over time build lasting physical, cognitive, and social resources. This contrasts with models where negative emotions narrow attention. The theory explains the cumulative value of positive emotion.

Why does repeatedly chewing on why am I so miserable make mood worse and recovery slower?
Nolen-Hoeksema's rumination research (1991) shows passively brooding on one's distress without action prolongs and deepens depression. Rumination circles the emotional wound, stealing energy from problem-solving; distraction or meaning reappraisal better breaks the downward elevator.

Why does replaying an embarrassing moment in the third person calm us faster than brooding why was I so stupid?
Kross's self-distancing work shows that recounting an emotional event from a third-person, observer view lowers heart rate and negative rumination (Kross et al., 2009, 2011). Creating psychological distance flips the brain from immersed hot to analytical cool processing, so feelings cool without being chewed over.
