How does the expectation-tension model account for felt tension and release in music?

Leonard Meyer, and later David Huron, argue that musical emotion largely arises from listeners' predictions: melodic deviation from learned scale statistics builds tension, while resolution toward the tonic delivers release. Huron's ITPRA framework decomposes the response into imagination, tension reaction, and predictive appraisal stages, explaining why a well-placed surprise moves us more than wholly predictable or chaotic sequences. Neuroimaging likewise finds dopaminergic activity in the nucleus accumbens at moments of musical surprise.

Why do some passages of music give listeners goosebumps or a shiver?

Musical chills tend to strike when expectation is delayed or suddenly fulfilled — an unexpected harmonic turn, or the burst after a long crescendo. Huron's expectation theory holds that the brain continuously issues probabilistic predictions about sound events; violated predictions trigger arousal, while delayed fulfillment amplifies the reward that follows. Imaging work by Salimpoor and colleagues found dopamine released in dorsal striatum during anticipation and ventral striatum during peak experience, anchoring the pleasure to specific circuits.
