What are implementation intentions (if-then plans) and why beat I'll try hard?
Gollwitzer's if X situation arises, then I do Y pre-binds trigger to action, cutting deliberation and procrastination at execution. Studies show it markedly lifts goal attainment, bridging the gap before habits automate.

Does the ego depletion theory still hold up?
Ego depletion claimed a limited mental energy for self-control depletes with use. Large failed replications and open-science scrutiny have weakened it; a safer view is that motivation and beliefs (e.g., believing willpower is limited) modulate effort, not a single energy tank.

Is intrinsic or extrinsic motivation better?
Intrinsic motivation (for interest/meaning) is usually more durable and deeply engaging; extrinsic (rewards/punishment) works short-term but breeds dependence. Yet extrinsic can be internalized into autonomous drive—when behavior feels linked to one's values.

What does self-determination theory say is truly lasting motivation?
Deci and Ryan argue that satisfying autonomy, competence, and relatedness yields the strongest, most lasting intrinsic motivation; externally rewarded behavior often stops once rewards vanish.

Why does goal-setting theory stress specific, moderately challenging goals?
Locke found vague goals (do your best) underperform; specific, moderately hard goals boost performance most by directing effort and feedback. Too-hard goals frustrate—pair with progress feedback and ability fit.

Why do small rewards help build habits?
Rewards mark a behavior as worth repeating in the cue-routine-reward loop, with dopamine reinforcing the link. Timely, consistent small rewards beat distant big ones—the brain values immediate positive feedback.

What is habit stacking and how do you use it to build new habits?
Habit stacking attaches a new behavior to an existing stable habit—e.g., after brushing teeth, meditate 1 minute. Leveraging the old cue lowers startup cost and makes the new routine easier to trigger—a practical behavior-design trick.

Can a habit really form in 21 days?
21 days came from a misread of plastic-surgery observations, not a universal rule. Lally et al. found habit automation averaged ~66 days, ranging 18-254 by behavior and person. Patience and repetition matter more than a number.

How do habits form, and what is cue-routine-reward?
Habits solidify via repeated cue to routine to reward loops. The brain automates frequent behavior to save energy, so changing habits means swapping the routine or cue, not just willpower.

Why are bad habits hard to break — how do good habits grow?
Habits are brain shortcuts: the more you repeat, the wider the path and the faster it auto-runs. Breaking them needs replacement, not willpower wrestling — want less TV, park books beside the remote. Good habits work the same: fixed time, tiny dose, and the longer you stick, the stronger the road grows.
