Kanizsa triangle: why do we 'see' an edge that isn't there?
When notched disks surround a gap, the brain completes a white triangle with crisp borders—a subjective contour. Perception is the brain actively filling in, not passively recording the retinal image.

Muller-Lyer illusion: why do arrow-headed lines look unequal?
Two equal lines look unequal by arrow direction; one explanation is the brain reads outward fins as convex and inward as concave corners, auto-correcting length by perceived 3D depth. It shows depth cues hijack flat judgments.

Why does a static image seem to move? (apparent motion)
When dots flash in sequence fast enough, the brain links them into smooth motion—apparent motion (the basis of neon signs and film). Motion perception can be 'invented' from discrete signals, not requiring real movement.

Why does the moon look bigger on the horizon than overhead?
In the moon illusion, a horizon moon looks larger against trees and buildings, while the high moon has no reference. Its angular size is nearly constant; the brain's size-distance estimate is fooled by context.

Why does a white wall in shadow still look white? (color constancy)
Color constancy lets us auto-correct for lighting so a white wall reads white in shadow or sun. It aids recognition but can trick us—the same dress is seen as different colors under different light.
