What is transfer of learning?
Transfer of learning is applying knowledge or skill from one context to another, as positive transfer (help) or negative transfer (interference). Riding a bike helps with an e-scooter, but native pronunciation can interfere with a foreign language. Understanding transfer helps design more general teaching.

What is transfer of learning and why does mastering A sometimes fail to help B?
Transfer is applying learned knowledge/skill to a new context. Near transfer (similar contexts) is easy; far transfer is hard, shaped by surface similarity and grasp of underlying principles. Over context-bound practice blocks transfer; emphasizing abstract principles promotes it.

What does cognitive load theory imply for designing effective learning?
Cognitive load theory says working memory is limited; learning is shaped by intrinsic (material difficulty), extraneous (poor presentation), and germane (schema-building) load. Good design cuts extraneous load, manages intrinsic, maximizes germane—e.g., chunk steps, remove clutter, use worked examples.

What are spaced repetition and flashcards?
Spaced repetition reviews material just before forgetting, based on the forgetting curve, to keep memory longest; flashcards put a question on one side and answer on the other for self-testing. Modern apps like Anki schedule reviews automatically. It is an evidence-backed efficient method.

Why does retrieval practice (self-testing) promote long-term retention better than repeated rereading?
Retrieval practice forces learners to actively reconstruct memory traces, a process that itself modifies and consolidates the representation, whereas rereading only boosts momentary fluency. In Roediger and Karpicke's experiments, one week after study the retrieval conditions forgot roughly half as much as restudying conditions, even though rereaders felt more confident at first. Such desirable difficulties show that subjective fluency and actual retention systematically dissociate.

What does the "spacing effect" suggest for learning and memory?
The spacing effect is that distributing study across sessions (spaced repetition) yields better long-term retention than massing it in one session (cramming). Ebbinghaus first observed it in the 19th century while studying the forgetting curve, and it is strongly supported by modern educational psychology.

Children who saw a model punished for hitting hardly imitated at all, yet the moment imitation was later promised a reward, they produced aggressive acts just as readily as everyone else. What does this classic result reveal about the relation between learning and performance?
Punishment never erased what the children had learned - it only suppressed performance. In Bandura's 1965 experiment different groups watched an aggressive model come to three fates; the punished group imitated far less on the spot, yet once rewards were promised for reproducing the acts they matched the others almost move for move, showing observation had already done the teaching. Vicarious consequences shift how likely an acquired act is expressed, which is why social learning theory keeps acquisition and performance apart.

Confronted with the very same demonstration, why do children lean toward imitating models they like or perceive as similar to themselves?
A model's appeal decides whether the first step of observational learning succeeds at all. Bandura held that imitation passes through attention, retention, reproduction and motivation; high-status, likable, or self-similar models grab children's attention most readily, so their actions get encoded and retained better. Identifying with a similar model also raises the expectation that 'if they can do it, so can I,' which strengthens the motivation to copy - hence identical demonstrations yield different amounts of learning.
