Are flashbulb memories always accurate?

Flashbulb memories are vivid recollections of the circumstances in which people learned about major events, such as earthquakes or a celebrity's death. Although people feel extremely confident about them, research shows their details are not markedly more accurate than ordinary memories. High confidence does not equal high accuracy.

How does the misinformation effect show that memory is reconstruction rather than playback?

In Loftus's classic study participants watched a traffic accident film and were then asked how fast the cars were going when they hit or smashed into each other; the harsher wording produced higher speed estimates and, a week later, more false reports of broken glass that was never in the film. Later work showed that suggestion with family collusion can lead a substantial minority of adults to remember events such as being lost in a shopping mall as children that never occurred. Language, expectations, and post-event information are thus integrated into the memory representation, so vividness and confidence do not guarantee accuracy — a direct concern for the legal use of eyewitness testimony.

What components make up Baddeley's working memory model, and what does it explain that short-term memory could not?

The model began with three parts: a phonological loop for verbal material, a visuospatial sketchpad for visual and spatial information, and a central executive that allocates attention and coordinates the subsystems, later joined by an episodic buffer that binds multimodal information and interfaces with long-term memory. Unlike the older view of short-term memory as one undifferentiated store, it explains why pairing a verbal with a spatial task interferes far less than pairing two verbal tasks, and it accounts for phonological similarity and word-length effects. Clinically, brain-injured patients can lose verbal working memory while spatial span stays intact, a dissociation that directly supports the multi-component architecture.

Is memory capacity seven chunks or four, and why can both claims be defended?

Miller's 1956 magical number seven plus or minus two came from classic span tasks that let participants rehearse silently, chunk items, and draw on long-term knowledge. Cowan re-examined the evidence and argued that once designs block rehearsal and chunking — as in change detection or immediate interference after presentation — the pure focus-of-attention capacity is only about four chunks. The disagreement is therefore about measurement conditions rather than arithmetic: seven reflects overall performance with rehearsal and knowledge support, while four approximates the core capacity limit.

What is distinctive about autobiographical memory?

Autobiographical memory is memory for personal life events, blending specific episodic detail with broader life-period summaries. It is shaped by self-schemas and cultural narratives and is often reshaped each time it is retold. Such memories reflect real experience yet also contain reconstructed elements.

Why, after hearing a list like bed, rest, awake, dream, do many people firmly believe they also heard the word sleep?

The DRM paradigm (Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995) uses semantically related words to elicit confident false memories of a never-present critical lure. It proves memory is not video replay but a meaning-based reconstruction, so even careful subjects confidently err - a stark warning for eyewitness testimony.

Why does retrieval practice beat rereading for long-term retention?

Actively recalling forces the brain to reconstruct a memory trace and select a successful retrieval route, and that process itself modifies and strengthens the path to the target while exposing gaps for targeted study. In Roediger and Karpicke's experiments the rereading group did better on an immediate test, but after a week the retrieval-practice group retained far more, producing the classic crossover pattern. The finding also shows learners judge mastery by momentary fluency and therefore systematically undervalue testing as a learning tool.

What is a source-monitoring error?

A source-monitoring error occurs when people recall the content correctly but misattribute its origin, such as mistaking something heard for something personally experienced. Such errors become more common with age or distraction. It shows why the source of a memory is often unreliable.

How do false memories form?

False memories are mistaken recollections of events that never happened or happened differently, often created by suggestion, imagination, and misleading information. Loftus's research showed that the wording of questions can make people 'remember' events that did not occur. This has major implications for eyewitness testimony.

Why do flashbulb memories feel exceptionally vivid without being more accurate?

Major public events trigger strong emotion and repeated retelling, producing memories of one's own circumstances that feel vivid, detailed, and highly confident. Tracking the same participants after the September 11 attacks, Talarico and Rubin found the consistency of flashbulb memories declined over time at about the same rate as ordinary everyday memories, while ratings of vividness and confidence barely dropped. Emotion therefore seems to boost the subjective experience and metacognitive appraisal of memory rather than its objective fidelity, and repeated retelling can introduce and cement errors.

What are desirable difficulties, and why does making learning slightly harder improve outcomes?

Bjork proposed that certain manipulations which raise encoding difficulty lower immediate performance yet improve long-term retention and transfer — interleaving problem types, delaying feedback, or generating an answer instead of reading it. The reason is that performance and learning are not the same: smooth repetition mainly boosts retrieval fluency in the current context, whereas difficulty forces learners to build more cues and sharper discrimination rules. The catch is that the difficulty must stay within the learner's reach, since beyond it there is only frustration — hence desirable rather than arbitrary difficulty.

What are proactive and retroactive interference?

Proactive interference occurs when old memories disrupt the learning of new ones, while retroactive interference occurs when new learning disrupts recall of old memories. Both are forms of competition between similar memories. Taking breaks between similar topics can reduce this interference.

How should review intervals be spaced, and what mechanism underlies the spacing effect?

Studies consistently show distributed review beats massed review, and the optimal gap scales roughly with the retention interval you care about: to remember something a month later, gaps of a few days work best, while a one-year goal favours gaps of weeks. Two mechanisms are usually invoked: encoding variability, since different sessions supply different contextual cues and thus more retrieval routes, and study-phase difficulty, since a partly faded memory demands more effortful retrieval that consolidates it more firmly. Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve supplied the first quantitative basis, and modern spaced-repetition software is that principle turned into engineering.

Why does returning to the exact room where you studied suddenly make the words come back?

Context-dependent memory means recall improves when the physical setting at retrieval matches encoding - shown in Godden and Baddeley's (1975) diver study. Likewise state-dependent memory improves when mood or physiology (even mild intoxication) at recall matches learning, so memory is bundled with body and place.

The Zeigarnik effect (Zeigarnik, 1927) is that interrupted, unfinished tasks are remembered better than completed ones, because an unclosed goal stays active and keeps grabbing attention. It explains why dangling to-dos make us restless and why writing them down lets the brain let go.
