What is the capacity of working memory?

The classic view is that adults hold about 7±2 separate chunks in working memory; more recent estimates suggest around 4±1. 'Chunking' can expand effective capacity.

What is prospective memory?

Prospective memory is remembering to do something in the future, such as 'buy milk on the way home' or 'take medicine in three hours'. It relies on executive function and contextual cues, and is harder to monitor consciously than recalling the past. It tends to decline with age.

What are episodic and semantic memory?

Episodic memory is memory of specific personal events with a time and place, like what happened at yesterday's birthday party. Semantic memory is factual and conceptual knowledge, like 'Paris is the capital of France', independent of personal experience. Both are types of declarative memory in long-term storage.

Why do older adults recall decades-old memories but forget where they put the keys?

Distant, often-recounted, emotionally rich events are consolidated for years and stay vivid, while “where did I put the keys” is a context memory that depends on attention at encoding — a moment of distraction and it never lands. Age-related memory change is mostly slower retrieval and more interference, not memory loss. A fixed spot for keys and reminder lists compensate beautifully.

What is prospective memory and why do we more often forget intended actions with age?

Prospective memory is remembering to perform an intention in the future (e.g., taking medication), split into time- and event-based types. It relies on executive control and monitoring; older adults especially fail without explicit cues due to weaker frontal and default-mode function.

What are the seven sins of memory proposed by Schacter?

Schacter groups memory failures into seven sins: transience and absent-mindedness (forgetting), plus misattribution, suggestibility, bias, persistence, and intrusions (distortion). They are side effects of an adaptive system—forgetting keeps the brain efficient at the cost of accuracy.

What is retrieval-induced forgetting, and why does repeated retrieval practice on some material hinder recall of the remaining material from the same category?

This effect refers to unpracticed items of a category becoming harder to retrieve after some of its members receive retrieval practice. The mechanism is competition and inhibition: while retrieving a target, associates sharing its cue are activated as competitors and must be suppressed for the target to win, leaving a lasting retrieval cost, as shown in Anderson and colleagues' retrieval-practice paradigm. It counsels covering every point when reviewing, and helps explain why asking a witness about one detail can momentarily block adjacent details.

What is the encoding specificity principle, and how did the diver memory experiments support it?

The principle states that retrieval succeeds when cues available at test match those established during encoding. Divers studied word lists either on land or underwater and later recalled them in the same or the other environment; free recall was markedly better when learning and testing contexts matched and fell sharply when they mismatched. Much forgetting thus reflects cue mismatch rather than trace loss—an effect strongest in free recall and weak in recognition, where strong cues are supplied.

Why does a fear memory stored stably for years briefly become unstable again - open to weakening or even rewriting - right after it is retrieved?

Every retrieval forces an old memory through consolidation once more - reconsolidation. A retrieval cue knocks the stable trace back into a molecularly unstable state that must restabilize through new protein synthesis. Nader and colleagues showed in Nature in 2000 that blocking protein synthesis in the rat amygdala after reactivation erased the behavioral expression of conditioned fear. That plastic window of a few hours is why exposure-based interventions stress acting soon after a memory is evoked.

What is a "flashbulb memory"?

A flashbulb memory is an unusually vivid and long-lasting memory of the circumstances in which one learned about a surprising, emotionally arousing event. Brown and Kulik proposed the concept in 1977, though later research shows such memories are often confident rather than perfectly accurate.

What is the method of loci?

The method of loci is an ancient memory technique that links items to be remembered with familiar locations, such as rooms in your home, and recalls them by mentally 'walking' through the space. Roman orators used it to remember long speeches. Turning abstract information into spatial images improves recall.

Why do we memorize phone numbers in chunks?

Short-term storage holds only so many items, but the brain can “package” information. Splitting 137911844 into 137-911-844 takes just three slots — that's chunking. A chunk can be a digit, a word, or a meaningful phrase, which is why memory experts weave facts into stories instead of rote repeating them.

Why do people remember an unusually dense cluster of events from roughly ages 15 to 25, like a highlight reel of their youth?

This is the reminiscence bump: when recalling autobiographical events, people report far more from late adolescence to early adulthood than from other periods (Rubin, Rahhal & Poon, 1998). A leading explanation is that identity formation, first loves and leaving home create a dense pile of novel firsts, and the young brain encodes such novel events especially strongly.

Why does the cognitive interview elicit more accurate details from witnesses than standard police questioning?

The cognitive interview builds on encoding specificity: retrieval succeeds when cues match those present at encoding. Interviewers guide witnesses to reinstate the physical and mental context of the scene and to recall events several times in different orders or perspectives, opening multiple routes into the memory trace, while leading questions are banned so that misleading information is never planted. Meta-analyses show large increases in correct details with only small rises in errors, and the technique has become standard police practice in many countries.

Why does spreading review sessions across several days usually build more durable long-term memory than cramming the same total study time into one late-night session?

This is the spacing effect. Distributed study forces a successful retrieval attempt at every re-exposure, and retrieval itself rebuilds and consolidates the memory trace; partial forgetting between sessions also makes each review deeper than mechanical rereading. Cramming feels fluent yet breeds an illusion of mastery, and retention drops sharply within days. Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 meta-analysis of hundreds of experiments confirmed that spaced schedules reliably improve long-term retention across many kinds of material.

Is a confident eyewitness always reliable? Merely swapping the verb from hit to smashed in a question can rewrite testimony—even making people remember fragments that never existed. How?

In 1974, Loftus and Palmer had participants watch identical footage of a car crash, changing only the verb in the question from hit to smashed. The smashed group estimated faster speeds and, a week later, more often remembered broken glass that never existed. Memory thus works by reconstruction rather than playback: post-event information merges into the original trace and systematically distorts recall of speed, detail, even who was involved. The effect directly spurred the adoption of police interview standards and double-blind lineup procedures.

Memory as a videotape is a dangerous myth — can question wording rewrite eyewitness testimony?

Loftus and Palmer showed subjects one crash film, then asked how fast the cars were going when they hit each other: estimates averaged about 40.8 miles per hour (about 66 km/h); swapping smashed for hit pushed averages to about 45.2 miles per hour (about 73 km/h), and a week later the smashed group doubled false claims of seeing broken glass — there was none. Memory reconstructs rather than replays: every recall weaves current information (question wording, others' accounts, imagination) into the trace, so frequent retelling drifts further from events. This explains wrongful identifications and contaminated child testimony — blind lineups and double-blind interviewing are direct offspring of these experiments.

After learning new material for the same hour, why do people who sleep overnight usually retain more the next day than those who pull an all-nighter?

Sleep itself is an active stage of consolidation. During slow-wave sleep the hippocampus replays the day's fresh traces into neocortex - sharp-wave ripples locked to cortical slow oscillations drive the replay - so memories gradually move from hippocampus-dependent short-term storage into long-term cortical networks. Sleep also blocks new interfering input while synaptic downscaling improves signal-to-noise. All-nighters skip that offline processing, leaving fragile new traces far easier to wash out.

Why does re-presenting during sleep the odor that accompanied learning markedly improve recall the next day?

The odor cue reactivates the day's fresh memory traces during slow-wave sleep. Systems consolidation relies on the hippocampus replaying new material into neocortex, and smells reach the hippocampus through a pathway that consumes almost no attention, so smelling the same scent asleep acts like pressing replay - fMRI showed the hippocampus lighting up accordingly. This targeted reactivation locks the memory into long-term cortical networks, so retrieval after waking comes faster and sharper.

Why do we remember new information better when we relate it to ourselves, and what is this phenomenon called?

In 1977 Rogers and colleagues found that judging whether information is self-relevant leads the brain to encode it more deeply, making later recall more reliable - the self-reference effect. Neuroimaging shows the medial prefrontal cortex, a region tied to self-processing, is strongly engaged, so about me becomes a powerful memory tag.

Why does quizzing yourself beat rereading ten times — what makes the testing effect counterintuitive?

Fluency deceives. Rereading breeds familiarity, and the brain mistakes easy recognition for mastery; retrieval practice — closed-book recall, self-quizzing — forces reconstruction of search pathways, each effortful successful pull strengthening the trace. Roediger and Karpicke showed in 2006 that after one week self-testers retained about fifty percent more than rereaders. Even failed attempts help, paving paths for later learning. The recipe is short: spaced repetition, self-questioning, teaching others; rereading plus highlighters remains the most popular yet least effective pairing.

Sleep is not a pause button for learning but the workshop where memories get consolidated. After falling asleep, the hippocampus replays freshly encoded material into neocortex, with coupling of slow waves and sleep spindles marking this offline rehearsal; sleep also cuts off the constant stream of new waking interference that would overwrite fragile traces. Pulling an all-nighter misses the replay window while interference keeps piling up, so with equal study time those who slept retrieve faster and more accurately.
