How does moral foundations theory explain divergence in moral judgment across political-cultural groups?

Jonathan Haidt and colleagues argue that moral intuition rests on evolved psychological foundations spanning care/harm, fairness/cheating, loyalty/betrayal, authority/subversion, and sanctity/degradation. Cross-cultural surveys show liberals rely chiefly on care and fairness, whereas conservatives weight all five foundations more evenly. This difference in foundation sensitivity explains why each side deems the other immoral, and offers an operational diagnostic for cross-ideological dialogue.

How does the dual-process theory of moral judgment explain why people diverge between throwing a switch and pushing a man in trolley dilemmas?

Greene's dual-process model holds that personal dilemmas (pushing with your own hands) strongly engage a situational emotion system centered on the amygdala, producing aversion to direct bodily harm, whereas impersonal dilemmas (throwing the switch) lean more on prefrontal utilitarian weighing; the competition between the two systems shapes response latencies and vacillation. Cushman further distinguishes how action-outcome and intention-outcome are encoded, explaining why people systematically judge different means to the same harm.

Why do people often arrive at a moral judgment first and only afterwards come up with reasons for it?

Haidt's social intuitionist model holds that fast affective intuitions produce moral judgments directly, while reasoning mainly serves as post hoc advocacy for conclusions already reached. Studies of 'moral dumbfounding' supply key evidence: faced with harmless taboo scenarios, participants insist the act is wrong yet cannot give any defensible justification. Reasoning thus behaves more like a lawyer than a judge, built to persuade others rather than to form the judgment itself.
