What higher functions does the prefrontal cortex support?

The prefrontal cortex supports executive functions such as planning, decision making, impulse control, and working memory. It matures late, not fully until the twenties, which partly explains adolescent impulsivity.

How did split-brain research reveal the division of labour between hemispheres?

In patients whose corpus callosum was severed to control severe epilepsy, direct communication between the hemispheres is interrupted. Sperry and Gazzaniga presented stimuli to a single visual field: an object shown to the right hemisphere could not be named aloud, yet the left hand could pick out the matching item from hidden objects, while stimuli shown to the left hemisphere were reported normally. This established that speech output depends mainly on the left hemisphere while spatial and holistic processing leans right. The work also revealed a left-hemisphere tendency to confabulate explanations for behaviour it did not initiate, with lasting implications for how self-narratives are constructed.

What are mirror neurons?

Mirror neurons fire both when an individual performs an action and when observing another do the same, first discovered by Rizzolatti in monkey brains. They are considered a neural basis for imitation, empathy, and language evolution.

What are synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation (LTP)?

Synaptic plasticity means the strength of connections between neurons can change with experience; LTP is the process where repeated activation strengthens a synapse and makes signaling more efficient. It is widely viewed as the cellular basis of learning and memory.

Why does the gate control theory of pain explain why rubbing a sore spot helps?

Melzack and Wall proposed a gate-like network of interneurons in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, where input from large A-beta touch and pressure fibres inhibits transmission of pain signals carried by small C and A-delta fibres, so rubbing, vibration, or transcutaneous electrical stimulation partly closes the gate. The theory also introduced descending control pathways, explaining how attention, emotion, and expectation act through brainstem and cortex to shape the pain experience and providing a mechanism for why pain does not simply mirror tissue damage. It directly inspired clinical techniques such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and launched the modern biopsychosocial model of pain.

Why is the brain far from off when we do nothing and just zone out?

Raichle and colleagues' default mode network (DMN, 2001) shows a set of regions fire up precisely when we rest, mind-wander or think about ourselves. The DMN handles self-reference, autobiographical memory and social simulation, and its overactivity links to depressive rumination - so zoning out is among the brain's costliest background modes.

病人 H.M.

How did the case of patient H.M. transform theories of memory systems?

To treat intractable epilepsy H.M. underwent bilateral removal of the medial temporal lobes including most of the hippocampus; afterwards his intelligence, language, and short-term memory were preserved but he could no longer form new episodic or semantic memories, leaving profound anterograde amnesia. The decisive observation was that he improved day by day on motor skills such as mirror drawing while insisting he had never attempted the task, proving procedural learning does not depend on the hippocampus. Memory was consequently reconceived not as a single faculty but as declarative and non-declarative systems with distinct neural substrates.

Mirror neurons are often over-interpreted — what is the cautious scientific view?

A class of neurons in macaque premotor cortex fires both when the monkey grasps an object and when it watches another grasp, and the finding was extended to explain empathy, the origins of language, and autism, generating a popular narrative. Critics point out that direct single-cell evidence in humans is sparse, that action understanding does not collapse wholesale in patients with apraxia or damaged motor systems, and that such responses may arise from learned sensorimotor associations rather than an innate comprehension mechanism. The prudent formulation is that mirror-like responses contribute to action prediction and imitation, but treating them as a unified explanation of social cognition is not adequately supported.

What is "neuroplasticity"?

Neuroplasticity is the nervous system's capacity to change its structure and functional connections after experience, learning, or injury, including synaptic strengthening, cortical reorganization, and neurogenesis. It operates across the lifespan and underlies recovery, learning, and memory, proposed early by Ramón y Cajal and confirmed by modern neuroimaging.

What does research on London taxi drivers reveal about adult brain plasticity?

Maguire's group found that taxi drivers who had passed London's demanding street-knowledge examination had larger posterior hippocampal grey matter volume than controls, with volume related to years on the job. To rule out pre-existing differences, the researchers followed trainees longitudinally and found posterior hippocampal growth only in those who eventually qualified, with no change in those who failed or in controls. This provides strong evidence that complex spatial learning can drive structural plasticity in adults, while also suggesting the adaptation carries trade-offs, since qualified drivers performed relatively worse on some tasks requiring new spatial learning.

Why do most antidepressants target the happy messengers noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin?

病人H.M.

Why is the case of patient H.M. regarded as a watershed in the neuropsychology of memory, and what key findings followed from his surgery?

To control intractable epilepsy, H.M. underwent bilateral medial temporal lobe resection in 1953, which left him with profound anterograde amnesia: he could form no new declarative memories, while short-term memory and remote memories from before the surgery remained largely intact. Scoville and Milner's 1957 case report showed that damage to the hippocampal region impaired consolidation of new memories even as procedural learning on tasks like mirror-drawing continued to improve normally. This double dissociation led researchers to split memory into separable systems and fixed the hippocampus at the center of declarative memory formation.
