Why can some people handle the same overtime while others break quickly?

Job-strain research (e.g., Karasek's demand–control model) finds the real hazard isn't workload itself but “high demand plus low control”: heavy demands with little decision latitude carry the greatest health risk. Social support from colleagues and supervisors buffers much of this. So people who “hold up” usually aren't tougher — they have more resources: adjustable pace, people to share with, and a felt sense of choice.

Why do smart teams sometimes make collectively foolish decisions?

That's groupthink: a team suppresses dissent to preserve harmony. With high cohesion, a dominant leader, and external pressure, members self-censor and go along, mistaking politeness for consensus while underestimating risks and rivals. Remedies include appointing a devil's advocate, having the leader speak last, and gathering anonymous input so dissenting voices have an institutional outlet.

Why do some leaders inspire willing followers while others rely on orders?

Leadership research contrasts transactional leaders (exchanging rewards and punishments) with transformational ones (articulating vision, modeling values, developing people). Transformational leadership predicts higher engagement and satisfaction; “charisma” looks more like an outcome than a cause. What earns willing followers is consistent, trustworthy, team-serving behavior — not the title itself.

Why do some jobs get more engaging while others drain all meaning?

According to self-determination theory, intrinsic motivation thrives when three basic needs are met: autonomy (having choice), competence (growing and mastering), and relatedness (good connections). Pay matters, but long-term engagement comes from controlling your pace, learning new things, and getting along with colleagues. That's why “meaningful work” isn't the same as “high-paying work.”

Why do some team members slack off while others do the heavy lifting?

That's social loafing: when individual contributions are hard to distinguish, people unconsciously reduce effort in a group. The good news: loafing drops when the task matters, members are close, and contributions are visible. Breaking big goals into identifiable individual tasks with regular feedback is a practical fix.

Why does a loved job turn into numbness over time?

Burnout isn't laziness — it's the accumulated result of chronic work stress: emotional exhaustion (running on empty), depersonalization (growing distant from the people you serve), and reduced accomplishment. Typical drivers include overload, low control, unfairness, and scarce support. Recovery involves adjusting load, restoring autonomy, and protecting sleep and rest; if it persistently disrupts life, seeking professional help is wise.
