What is 'change blindness'?
Change blindness is that people often fail to notice obvious changes in a scene even while looking at it, especially across a blink or cut. It shows attention is limited and we process only a little information. It is used to study the boundary of perception and consciousness.

What is synesthesia?
Synesthesia is a crossing of the senses—e.g., seeing colors when hearing sounds or tasting flavors from numbers—present in about 4% of people, from atypical connections or 'leakage' between sensory brain areas.

Why does mirror writing or reading reversed text feel odd?
Our brains are tuned to text presented upright and left-to-right; mirror reversal breaks learned shape and motor expectations, requiring extra processing and feeling awkward.

What is a threshold (in perception)?
The absolute threshold is the minimum intensity we can just detect, like the faintest audible sound. The difference threshold is the smallest change we can distinguish, and Weber's law says it is proportional to the original stimulus. Thresholds help us understand sensory sensitivity.

Why does pain feel worse the more we focus on it?
Pain is both a physiological signal and amplified by attention and emotion: the more we focus and worry, the stronger the brain's pain perception. Distraction (music, talking) can effectively reduce pain. This partly reflects the 'gate control theory'.

Why can we hear our name in a noisy room?
This is the 'cocktail party effect', where the brain automatically filters and prioritizes important information like one's own name amid many sounds. It relies on selective attention and shows hearing is not passive. Familiar voices and emotional words are caught more easily.

What is a visual illusion?
A visual illusion is the brain's misinterpretation of visual information, making us 'see' things that are not there or wrong shapes. In the Müller-Lyer illusion, two equal lines look unequal. It shows perception is not camera-like copying but active construction.

Why do the two objectively equal lines of the Müller-Lyer illusion look different in length?
Gregory's classic account invokes misapplied size constancy: a line with outward-pointing fins resembles the concave inner corner of a far wall, so the visual system scales its length up, while inward-pointing fins are read as a near convex edge and scaled down. Cross-cultural research supports a learned component—groups raised in environments nearly devoid of straight lines and right angles show markedly lower susceptibility to geometric illusions. Yet retinal-level mechanisms such as lateral inhibition also explain part of the effect, so no single cause is settled.

What is the difference between sensation and perception?
Sensation is the senses receiving stimuli (eyes catching light, skin feeling cold), while perception is the brain organizing and interpreting those signals (recognizing it as a cat). Without sensation there is no material; without perception the information is just noise. Together they let us know the world.

Why is it hard to walk straight with eyes closed?
Walking needs the eyes for spatial position and direction; with eyes closed we mainly rely on the inner-ear balance and muscle sense, which are less precise. So people unconsciously drift to one side. This shows vision is very important for spatial perception and balance.

Why does time seem to slow down in danger?
Under high arousal the brain samples the environment at a higher rate, so more moments are 'recorded'; recalling them makes the episode feel stretched. It's largely a memory illusion, not real slowdown.

Why do we feel 'déjà vu'?
'Déjà vu' is a sudden feeling that a new scene has been experienced before, though it has not. A possible cause is a brief 'mismatch' in the brain's memory system, treating new information as old memory. Most people experience it and it is usually harmless.

Why do we see faces in clouds or walls?
