How is the default mode network linked to dreaming and mind-wandering?
The default mode network (DMN) activates during rest, mind-wandering, and autobiographical thought, and is heavily engaged in REM dreams. It stitches past experience into a self-narrative; dreams and daydreams may both be DMN-led offline, self-related simulations aiding identity integration and future planning.

Why do some people thrive on four or five hours of sleep while others cannot?
A tiny fraction of natural short sleepers carry mutations such as DEC2 that let them recover fully on far less sleep (Fu et al., 2009, Science). These variants reshape clock and sleep-depth regulation and are not willpower; for most people chronic short sleep still harms memory and metabolism, so copying them is unwise.

Is the sleep-emotion link one-way or bidirectional?
It is bidirectional: sleep loss amplifies amygdala reactivity and weakens prefrontal control, worsening mood regulation; conversely, anxiety/depression disrupt sleep architecture (especially REM and deep sleep). A vicious cycle—improving either side eases the other.

How does sleep contribute to memory consolidation, and how do slow-wave and REM sleep differ in role?
During slow-wave sleep, hippocampal firing sequences formed during the day are replayed at compressed speed and coupled with cortical slow oscillations and thalamic spindles, gradually transferring memories to neocortex in what is called systems consolidation, a process especially important for declarative material. REM sleep is more closely tied to regulating emotional memory, stabilising procedural skills, and integrating associations across memories, which supports rule extraction and novel connections. Experimentally, retention after a nap or a night of sleep exceeds an equal period of wakefulness, and replaying an odour or sound cue from learning during slow-wave sleep can selectively strengthen the associated memory.

Why do we get sleepier the longer we stay awake, yet a short nap can restore us?
Borbély's two-process model (1982) splits sleep drive into a sleep homeostatic pressure and the circadian rhythm. While awake, brain cells burn ATP and release adenosine, which accumulates as a rising sleep-pressure clock; caffeine blocks adenosine receptors to mask it, and a nap partly clears that pressure.

Why is cognitive behavioural therapy, not sleeping pills, the first-line treatment for insomnia?
Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia combines sleep restriction, stimulus control, cognitive restructuring, and sleep hygiene education, aiming to break the conditioned association between bed and anxious wakefulness while rebuilding a strong sleep drive. Randomised trials show short-term efficacy comparable to sedative hypnotics, but its benefits persist for months after treatment ends, whereas stopping medication often brings rebound insomnia and tolerance. On that basis guidelines from bodies such as the American College of Physicians name it the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in adults, and digital delivery has substantially improved access.

Why can't teenagers fall asleep at night and get up in the morning?
In adolescence the body clock (circadian rhythm) shifts later: melatonin peaks later, so teens aren't sleepy on schedule. That's normal development, not laziness. Many places now debate later school start times because research shows more sleep improves attendance, mood, and grades.
