Why do people do things in crowds they'd never do alone?
When anonymity rises and attention is drawn to group action, self-awareness drops — “deindividuation.” Internal standards and guilt weaken, and people follow immediate emotions and the crowd. It shows up in anonymous online spaces and packed concerts. Knowing “anonymity makes me impulsive” helps you brake before emotion peaks.

Why might we hold biases we don't even realize?
Stereotypes and prejudice can be explicit (acknowledged) or implicit — automatic, fast, often clashing with our own values. Tools like the Implicit Association Test (IAT) measure unconscious associations through response times. Implicit bias grows from media and cultural stereotypes, not personal moral failure; but acknowledging it and actively correcting via intergroup contact and counter-stereotypic imagery is an evidence-based way to reduce discriminatory behavior.

Why does the “us vs. them” line escalate once drawn?
Social identity theory (Tajfel) holds that part of the self-concept rests on group membership, and self-esteem is boosted by in-group favoritism. Even random groupings — say, assigned to A or B by a coin flip — produce bias: members favor their own and give more resources to it. Such identification is harmless by itself, but it shows why stereotypes and prejudice are so stubborn: they serve the sense that “we are better.”

What truth about authority did Milgram's obedience experiments reveal?
Milgram found ~65% of ordinary participants delivered apparently lethal shocks under authority's orders, citing the experimenter is responsible. It shows people offload moral responsibility under hierarchy and gradual commitment—but later work stresses obedience is moderated by context and values, not pure evil.

Why do group discussions often push opinions to extremes?
Group polarization: after discussion, the group's average stance moves further toward its initial lean. Reasons include a pool of arguments biased toward the existing lean, social comparison (wanting to seem loyal and decisive), and reinforcement from being accepted. The risk is that moderate voices fade and the group can drift toward hazardous “groupthink.”

How does social identity theory explain intergroup bias and conflict?
Tajfel argued self-worth partly rests on group membership, so people boost esteem via in-group favoritism and out-group derogation. Even random groups show bias—conflict needn't stem from real interests but from us vs them identity construction.

Yes — the self-fulfilling prophecy. In the Rosenthal experiment, children randomly labeled “high potential” later showed real gains, because expectations changed teacher attention, encouragement, and the children's confidence. Expectation isn't magic; it changes the quality of interaction. Used kindly, positive expectations help people do better.

Why do some ads persuade with logic and others with a celebrity?
The elaboration likelihood model (ELM) says persuasion runs two routes: the central route carefully weighs arguments (high-involvement choices like a house), and the peripheral route leans on image, celebrities, and tone (low-involvement choices like snacks). Both can change attitudes, but central-route attitudes last longer and resist reversal.

Why do some people shine with an audience while others fall apart?
That's social facilitation: the presence of others raises arousal, boosting well-learned, simple performance while making unfamiliar or mentally demanding tasks more error-prone. So both “shows off with a crowd” and “freezes on stage” are real — it depends on skill mastery and sensitivity to evaluation. Practice a skill to fluency, and the audience often shifts from interference to fuel.

Why do we value a group more after we suffered to join it?
Effort justification means the more costly the entry into a group, the more we raise its value, to reduce the dissonance of I suffered for nothing (Aronson & Mills, 1959). In the classic study, people who endured a harsh initiation rated the group more interesting than those admitted easily - the pain itself got reinterpreted as it must be worth it.

Why do more bystanders mean less help?
This is the bystander effect: with more people, everyone assumes “someone else will act,” responsibility spreads thin (diffusion of responsibility), and people look to others who also stay still, misjudging the situation as not serious. Classic studies by Darley and Latané found lone witnesses help more. Simply knowing this helps you step up in a crisis.

In an interview, are first impressions or last words remembered better?
Both — but for different reasons. Primacy: the first information arrives first and frames how everything later is read. Recency: the last information is still fresh in short-term memory when you judge. If judgment comes right after, recency wins; after a delay, primacy lasts longer. Moral: prepare both your opening and your closing.

Why are we more likely to say yes once a salesperson drops a discount after we reject a huge opening offer?
Two compliance techniques are at work: foot-in-the-door (a small request first, then a bigger one; Freedman & Fraser, 1966) leverages consistency, while door-in-the-face (a big rejected request followed by a smaller one; Cialdini et al., 1975) leverages contrast and reciprocity. Being with others spends mental energy; alone time lets the brain sort feelings and recharge. Wanting quiet time isn't unfriendly—it's normal recharging.

Why can't we stop comparing ourselves with others, and why does it leave us either puffed up or deflated?
Festinger's social comparison theory (1954) says we have a drive to evaluate our opinions and abilities, and when no objective yardstick exists we use other people. Upward comparison with better others can motivate or wound, while downward comparison with worse others protects self-esteem, so comparing both calibrates us and manages mood.
