What is allostatic load and how does it quantify long-term stress damage?

McEwen coined allostatic load: repeated/chronic stress makes regulatory systems (HPA, cardiovascular, metabolic, immune) repeatedly imbalance, accumulating wear into multisystem disease risk. It scores biomarkers like blood pressure, cortisol, and inflammation—making stress damages the body measurable.

What is post-traumatic growth and why do some grow stronger after pain?

Tedeschi and Calhoun found some report positive change after crisis—closer relationships, clearer priorities, stronger personal strength. Growth does not cancel pain; through meaning reconstruction and active coping, new perspectives grow from the rupture.

Lazarus

How does Lazarus's cognitive appraisal theory define stress?

Lazarus argued stress is not in the event but in appraisal: primary (is this a threat?) and secondary (can I cope?). The same event becomes challenge or threat by appraisal—so cognitive reappraisal is key to reducing stress.

What is the 'goodness of fit' between a coping strategy and situational controllability, and why does problem-focused coping not always win?

The goodness-of-fit hypothesis holds that a strategy succeeds when it matches how controllable the stressor is. Folkman and Lazarus found that problem-focused coping predicted better adjustment under controllable stressors, whereas with uncontrollable ones stubborn problem-solving bred frustration while acceptance and cognitive reappraisal went with fewer symptoms. Empirical tests by Vitaliano and colleagues likewise showed markedly more depressive symptoms when coping and controllability mismatched—the question shifts from which coping is best to which coping fits when.

Is stress good or bad for memory?

It depends on timing and intensity: acute moderate stress can enhance encoding of survival-relevant events (adrenaline aids memory); but chronic stress or high stress at recall impairs hippocampus-dependent precise recall and biases toward negative material. Acute helps, chronic hurts.

Selye

What stages make up Selye's general adaptation syndrome?

Selye's GAS has three stages: alarm (rapid mobilization), resistance (adapting and staying on high alert), and exhaustion (resources depleted, breakdown). It shows that unrelenting stress beyond capacity eventually harms health.

What is psychological resilience and can it be built?

Resilience is not never hurt but recovering and adapting after adversity, shaped by genes, support, and coping. It is trainable via social connection, reappraisal, and regular sleep/exercise—not a fixed gift.

Why is chronic stress more harmful than short-term stress?

Short-term stress is adaptive mobilization; chronic stress keeps cortisol high, suppressing immunity, harming hippocampal memory and the cardiovascular system, and disrupting metabolism. Bodies evolved for occasional stress; sustained high levels lead to wear.

In Lazarus's transactional model of stress, what do “primary appraisal” and “secondary appraisal” respectively refer to?

In this model, stress is not an inherent property of events; it emerges from a person's dynamic evaluation of the fit between environmental demands and personal resources. Primary appraisal judges whether an event threatens harm or instead presents a challenge; secondary appraisal takes stock of the resources and options available for coping. Stress is experienced when demands are judged to exceed available resources, which is why the same event can provoke different reactions in different people. This framework also grounded the classic distinction between problem-focused and emotion-focused coping.

Why do we get nervous before exams, and is nervousness always bad?

Nervousness is the body mobilizing energy for an important task (sympathetic activation). Moderate nerves boost focus and performance (Yerkes-Dodson law); only excess hurts. The key is keeping arousal in the optimal zone.

Why does deep breathing calm us down?

Slow deep breathing activates the parasympathetic system, lowering heart rate and cortisol and breaking the sympathetic over-arousal loop. It is one of the few ways to directly, top-down regulate the autonomic nervous system—fast and tool-free.

What is the fight-or-flight response?

Facing threat, the sympathetic nervous system and adrenaline speed the heart, send blood to muscles, and narrow attention to prepare fight or flight. An evolutionary survival mechanism—useful short-term, harmful if chronically activated.
