How does material culture studies challenge the culture-nature dichotomy?

Material culture studies attend to how objects, technologies, and spaces carry and shape meaning, treating things as active rather than passive containers. Latour's actor-network theory shows human and non-human elements form hybrid networks, blurring the nature-culture boundary.

How does Levi-Strauss use structuralism to interpret myths of the raw and the cooked?

In Mythologiques, he reads raw/cooked as the nature/culture axis, with cooking as culture's transformation of nature, a symbol of universal mental structure. Comparing mythic variants cross-culturally, he argues the human mind organizes meaning through binary oppositions and their mediation.

What is ritual in anthropology, and what social functions does it typically serve?

What is kinship, and how did Morgan classify it?

Kinship is the system of rules defining social relations and obligations through blood and marriage. In Ancient Society, Morgan classified societies by descent reckoning into matrilineal and patrilineal types and inferred evolutionary stages from kinship terminology.

What is cultural relativism, and why is it both important and limited?

Cultural relativism holds that a culture's practices should be understood by its own standards rather than judged by another's, countering ethnocentrism. Taken to extremes it risks anything-goes relativism, struggling to address conflicts with universal values like human rights.

How does Mauss, in The Gift, explain why gift exchange creates social obligation and solidarity?

Surveying Polynesia and beyond, Mauss argues gifts are not free but part of a cycle of give, receive, and return. By compelling reciprocation, exchange sustains ongoing bonds of mutual dependence among persons, things, and groups.

What is acculturation, and what patterns does it typically take in migration studies?

Acculturation is the change in customs, language, and values when cultures contact. Berry identified four strategies, assimilation, separation, integration, and marginalization, with integration typically yielding better adaptation.

What really draws the line between a “proper meal” and a snack, and why did Mary Douglas treat a meal as a social code awaiting decipherment?

Using structural analysis in her 1972 essay, Douglas argued that meals obey a grammar of their own: the division between drinks and dishes and the ranking of staple and trimmings jointly announce whether an occasion is a dinner, a nibble, or hospitality — the same biscuit becomes lunch when sandwiched in bread, and tea when spread with jam. Such codes mark kinship, obligations to guests, and the border between insiders and outsiders; eating thus chiefly performs social classification and keeps group boundaries alive, with nourishment only one layer of its meaning.
