How did grain transport tie 'southern food' to 'northern power'?

In imperial China the political center (Chang'an, Beijing) lay in the north while the grain heartland was in the south. Shipping tax grain north by canal fed the court, the army, and the bureaucracy, keeping the central state running. Whoever controlled the grain transport held the capital's lifeline; if the canal failed, northern power wobbled.

Why can a canal help shape a unified economic sphere?

Water transport is far cheaper than land; a canal links producers and consumers into a network, equalizing grain and salt prices over a vast area and moving people and know-how, knitting local markets into one big market.

Why is the social cost and benefit of building the Grand Canal often debated?

Mass conscription caused huge hardship and death (high cost), yet it long secured the capital's supply, stabilized grain prices and linked north and south (high benefit). Costs fell on the poor while benefits went to the state and merchants, so views differ.

Why did people in ancient times move rice from the south to the north?

The south had more rain and rice; the north held the emperor, soldiers and officials whose local harvest fell short, so rice was shipped north by water.

What was the Grand Canal mainly used for?

The Grand Canal moved southern grain (especially rice) by water to northern political centers (e.g., Chang'an, Luoyang, Beijing) and carried salt and goods. It was a lifeline transport artery for the state.
