汉字的统一塑造了“文化认同”,却为何没有自然形成“民族国家”?

Unified characters shaped a 'cultural identity'—so why didn't they naturally produce a 'nation-state'?

统一的汉字让不同方言、地域的人共享一套文化与历史记忆,形成了“天下”式的文明认同。但古代中国认同的是“文化”而非“民族”——只要接受礼乐教化,便是“华夏”。这种以文明为核心的认同,对应的是王朝/帝国形态,而不是以公民—民族为边界的现代民族国家。
Unified Chinese characters let people across dialects and regions share one culture and historical memory, forming a 'tianxia' (all-under-heaven) civilizational identity. But pre-modern China identified with 'culture' rather than 'ethnic nation'—anyone who accepted its rites and learning was 'Huaxia.' This culture-centered identity corresponded to a dynasty/empire, not a modern nation-state defined by a citizen-nation boundary.

为什么汉字难学,却能在数千年里长期存续?

Why did characters survive for millennia despite being hard to learn?

难学但“超方言、超时代”:它不依赖发音,能连接古今与各方言区,使典籍与制度可跨时空传承。对统一文明的维系价值,超过了学习成本。
Hard yet 'trans-dialect and trans-era': independent of pronunciation, it links ancient and modern and all dialects, letting classics and institutions pass across time and space. Its value to a unified civilization outweighed learning cost.

为什么方言彼此听不懂,却能用同一种汉字交流?

Why can mutually unintelligible dialects still share one writing system?

汉字表意不表音:同一个“水”字,各地读音不同但字形意义相同。书面语因此跨越了语音鸿沟,使广阔地域形成“书同文”的文化共同体。
Characters encode meaning, not sound: the same '水' is read differently yet means water everywhere. Written language thus bridged the sound gap, forming a 'shared script' cultural community across vast regions.

为什么汉字不是字母文字?

Why isn't Chinese written with an alphabet?

汉字是表意文字,一个字代表一个意思或语素,历史上从图画与象形演变而来。它不随语音改变拼写,所以不同方言、不同读音的人能读同一套字。
Chinese characters are logographs—each stands for a meaning or morpheme, evolved from pictures and pictographs. They don't change spelling with pronunciation, so people with different dialects can read the same writing.
