Why does Olson argue in The Logic of Collective Action that large groups cooperate less easily than small ones?
Olson notes that in larger groups each member's contribution barely moves the total benefit while free-riding yields private gain, so rational individuals withhold effort. Small groups, where each share is large, overcome inertia more easily; large ones need selective incentives to mobilize.

How has connective action in the networked era changed how social mobilization works?
Bennett and Segerberg argue digital media let individuals coordinate via shareable personalized frames without traditional hierarchical organizations. Compared with resource-dependent collective action, connective action aggregates through loose, decentralized, affect-laden online networks.

What is a social movement, and what elements does it typically comprise?
A social movement is an organized, sustained collective effort to pursue or resist social change. It typically comprises shared grievances, informal networks, a collective identity, and a repertoire of contention such as marches and petitions.

What collective dilemma does Hardin's tragedy of the commons illustrate?
Hardin's pasture example shows each herder adds livestock for private gain, and individual rationality exhausts the commons, a collective loss. It shows that open-access resources without property rights or rules are inevitably depleted by free use.

What is the free-rider problem, and why does it hinder public-goods provision?
Free-riding is enjoying a public good's benefits without paying. Because public goods are non-excludable, everyone waits for others to pay, leading to under-provision or none at all, resolved only by taxation or compulsion.

What are public goods, and how do they fundamentally differ from private goods?
Public goods are both non-excludable and non-rival, while private goods like bread are rival and excludable, so markets supply the latter but under-provide the former.

How does resource mobilization theory answer the question of why people join social movements differently from classical collective behavior theory?
Classical collective behavior theory attributed movements to grievances and anomie bred by structural strain, treating them as emotional eruptions. McCarthy and Zald countered that grievances are nearly always present, so the real variable is whether resources—money, organizational networks, communication channels, professional staff—can be mobilized; movement organizations rationalize goals like any other organization. Research accordingly shifted from psychological states to organizational ecology, SMOs, and sponsor structures.

Why do social movements push for change through collective action rather than individual appeals?
Sociologist Charles Tilly defined social movements as sustained collective challenges built around common claims, pressuring powerholders through assemblies, petitions, and public statements. A lone voice is easily ignored or suppressed, whereas collective action pools resources, creates political pressure, and moves issues onto the public agenda. Movement outcomes also hinge on political opportunity structures and trust networks among participants, which is why similar grievances mobilize very differently at different moments.
