Why did Maurice Halbwachs hold that individual memory depends on social frameworks, and how does collective memory differ from history?
Maurice Halbwachs argued that although remembering happens inside individual minds, its organization comes from the group: language, family, religion, and class supply the frameworks through which people locate the past, and memories stabilize only in conversation and comparison with others. Collective memory is thus not a faithful archive of history but a continuing reconstruction serving present group needs—each generation retells yesterday according to its own concerns, with commemorations and shared narratives institutionalizing that reconstruction.

Why do sociologists argue that “cultural trauma” stems not from events themselves but from social construction?
As Jeffrey C. Alexander and colleagues argued in 2004, whether a collectivity becomes traumatized depends on meaning-making rather than the raw event. Carrier groups—typically intellectuals—compete in claims about the nature of the event, its victims, and its perpetrators, fixing chosen narratives into public memory through media, law, and ritual. Cultural trauma exists only once such narratives win broad acceptance and group boundaries are redrawn. The theory explains why one catastrophe can leave very different memory consequences across communities.

What does Pierre Nora mean by "sites of memory" (lieux de mémoire)?
Pierre Nora's multi-volume project argues that as living environments of memory dissolved along with traditional society, communities fixed remembrance in particular places: archives, monuments, anniversary celebrations, even textbooks. Because spontaneous transmission could no longer be relied upon, such sites were deliberately created to condense group identity, yet they often become controversial over whom they commemorate and whom they omit. The concept reveals that collective memory persists only by attaching itself to material and symbolic supports.
