Why do data markets tend to fail, and what has been the actual impact of GDPR-style regulation?
Data is non-rival (usable by many at once), subject to source externalities (others' data can be used to infer things about me), and plagued by information asymmetry (users don't know what is collected or where it flows), so prices can't internalize privacy harm—data market failure. The GDPR tries to reset power through informed consent, purpose limitation, the right to erasure, and fines. Evidence shows it genuinely raised transparency and gave users real rights, but also brought compliance costs that hit smaller platforms harder, consent fatigue (mechanical clicking of “agree”), and some reallocation of data processing to less-regulated jurisdictions. The assessment: privacy regulation changes behavior, but its costs and distributional effects are far more complex than the slogan “protecting users.”

How does framing work in communication?
The framing effect means the same fact, presented differently (gain vs loss, perpetrator vs victim), elicits very different judgments. Media “frame” issues through wording, images, and layout. It shows communication is not just content but a contest of presentation.

In communication studies, what misjudgment of media influence does the 'third-person effect' describe?
Davison proposed in 1983 that people tend to believe media messages strongly affect 'others' but only weakly affect themselves, a bias that can shape opinion and behavior such as supporting censorship. The third-person effect reveals how a 'self-exception' psychology molds public attitudes.

What is the "spiral of silence" theory?
Noelle-Neumann's spiral of silence: if people sense their view is minority, fear of isolation makes them speak less, making the majority seem stronger and the minority quieter in a self-reinforcing loop. It explains suppressed dissent behind apparent consensus. Social media can amplify or break it.

What is an "information cocoon", how does it form, and what are its effects?
An information cocoon means encountering only content that confirms your existing views, as if walled inside your own world. It's fed by recommendation algorithms, homogeneous social networks, and selective exposure: algorithms keep serving what you like, your circles share similar views, and over time, different groups' readings of the same facts diverge, polarization deepens, and public debate suffers. Remedies include deliberately seeking diverse information, media literacy, and greater algorithmic transparency.

How do recommendation algorithms shape the information environment, and where is the line between “optimization” and “manipulation”?
Recommendation algorithms maximize engagement (clicks, dwell time, shares) and tend to amplify emotional, conflict-heavy, reaction-prone content; through A/B testing they continually “learn” users' vulnerabilities, shaping a personalized information environment. Critics argue that when a system is designed to exploit cognitive biases (anger, fear, addiction loops), even well-intentioned “optimization” constitutes digital manipulation; opponents counter that algorithms merely respond to real preferences and that responsibility lies with users and content producers. Regulatory debate therefore centers on transparency (explainability, algorithmic audits), child protection, and “anti-addictive” design—yet a precise boundary remains unsettled.

How does platform “algorithmic management” differ fundamentally from traditional bureaucratic management, and what does it mean for workers' bargaining power?
Traditional management uses human supervisors, face-to-face oversight, and formal appraisal; algorithmic management delegates dispatch, pricing, routing, scoring, and discipline to automated systems whose hallmarks are continuous self-executing decisions, deep data asymmetry (platforms hold everything, workers see fragments), opaque rules changeable unilaterally at any time, and “score as punishment” soft discipline (bad ratings reduce orders). Algorithms atomize workers into independent nodes with no single entity to bargain with, undermining collective negotiation—an institutional root of gig workers' weak bargaining power. Responses include algorithmic transparency duties, rating-appeal mechanisms, platform-level worker representation, and returning data rights (portability, explainability) to workers.

What are “opinion leaders,” and why does mass-media information often reach audiences through them?
Opinion leaders are active, trusted people who interpret and filter media content for those around them. The two-step flow model of communication holds that media influence reaches opinion leaders first, then ordinary audiences through them, which is why campaigns, marketing, and political persuasion often find it more efficient to influence such individuals than to broadcast broadly. Today's online KOLs are the digital continuation of this role.

Why do rumors often spread faster than the truth?
Rumors are wrapped in strong emotion, such as fear, anger, or novelty, and emotional content gets shared more; they're simple and easy to grasp, needing no expertise to spread; many people forward without checking sources as long as it's sensational. Recommendation algorithms that favor high-engagement content amplify them, and research shows rumors get reshaped in transmission, becoming increasingly exaggerated.

How does the news media shape public opinion?
Mainly through agenda-setting and framing: media can't cover everything, so what gets reported and where it's placed tells the public what matters, while the angle and language of a story shape how it's understood. Public attention often follows media coverage. But it's not one-way: audiences actively filter information, and social media blurs the line between audience and publisher.

What is an informational cascade, and why do rational people follow the crowd?
An informational cascade occurs when people rely on observing others' actions rather than their own private information; early decisions transmit signals that make later people ignore their own judgment and imitate, forming a cascade. It explains stock-market herding, viral products, and queue-following. Cascades are highly sensitive to small disturbances—one early random event can lock in an outcome—so crowds can converge on choices that are not optimal.

Does the 'knowledge gap' hypothesis say media diffusion widens or narrows the knowledge gap between groups?
Tichenor, Donohue, and Olien argued in 1970 that as mass-media information grows, higher socio-economic-status people absorb it faster, so the knowledge gap between groups actually widens. The hypothesis shows information inequality can deepen with media development rather than automatically close.

Why is "media literacy" increasingly necessary for modern people?
Because information is unprecedentedly abundant yet uneven in quality, and fake news, clickbait, and deepfakes make truth ever harder to tell. Media literacy is the ability to use information critically: judging source credibility, separating fact from opinion, cross-checking claims, and recognizing advertising and algorithmic manipulation. It's like immunity in the digital age, which is why many countries and schools now teach it as a basic skill.

Why is personal data valuable, and what are the limits of the saying “data is the new oil”?
Personal data enables targeted advertising, credit scoring, risk management, and product improvement, giving it commercial value—platforms offering “free” services are effectively paid in data. But unlike oil, data is infinitely replicable, produced by individuals, and its flow is often invisible to them, so markets price it poorly and consent, control, and dignity are at stake. That is why laws such as the GDPR stress informed consent, portability, and the right to erasure, treating privacy as a fundamental right rather than a mere commodity.

What does Gerbner's 'cultivation theory' say about how heavy TV viewing reshapes people's sense of reality?

Gerbner argued in the 1970s that long-term heavy TV viewers gradually take the screen world for the real one—for example, overestimating the likelihood of violent crime. Cultivation theory stresses that media rarely persuades directly but slowly 'cultivates' a shared imagination of society.

Why are large content platforms criticized both for removing too much and too little?
Platform governance balances free expression against public safety, privacy, and child protection. Over-moderation suppresses legitimate speech and participation; under-moderation lets misinformation, hate speech, scams, and harmful content flourish. Because content volume is enormous, platforms rely on algorithmic pre-filtering plus human review, and algorithms misjudge (over- and under-removal) and miss cultural context; blame for under-removal also tends to outweigh attention to over-removal, so no rule pleases both sides.

Why do some posts go "viral" overnight?
Virality depends on emotional arousal and high share value: content triggers strong feelings, such as surprise, anger, empathy, or humor, and gives people a way to express themselves or help others. Early spreaders such as influencers and active groups, plus platform recommendation, light the fuse; past a critical mass, sharing snowballs. Content that's easy to grasp and remix, such as memes and jokes, also travels faster.
