What is “community building” and what does it address?
Community building means residents jointly plan and improve local spaces and ties, boosting belonging and self-governance. It tackles indifferent “stranger neighborhoods” with weak public participation.

Why does the neighborhood you grow up in affect your life chances?
Sociological research finds neighborhood effects are real: communities shape access to resources, including school quality, public facilities, job networks, safety, and peer role models. Children in advantaged neighborhoods meet more opportunity-rich information and ties, while those in deprived areas face stacked disadvantages in safety, schooling, and expectations, with effects strongest in early childhood and cumulative over time. That's why equal opportunity depends not only on individual effort but on community-level services and housing policy.

After major disasters, affected communities often suffer lasting ruptures of social ties and trust. Based on his fieldwork on the 1972 Buffalo Creek flood in West Virginia, which core concept did Kai Erikson coin to characterize this kind of damage that goes beyond the individual, and what does it involve?
He called it “collective trauma”: what the disaster eroded was the social fabric itself, leaving survivors unable to count on their neighbors for mutual aid. In his book Everything in Its Path he documented how residents slid from a close-knit community into wary, isolated households, stressing that this trauma is rooted in torn social organization and belonging rather than in individual psychological stress alone.

Why is living in a close-knit community good for health?
Close-knit communities provide social support: help in hard times, someone to talk to under stress, shared childcare and eldercare, and a sense of being needed and belonging that fights loneliness. A large body of research consistently finds people with strong social ties are healthier in body and mind and live longer; social support acts as a key protective factor for health.

Why are cafés and parks called "third places"?
Third places are public spots beyond home and work where people can linger and mingle freely, such as cafés, parks, community libraries, and squares. They let people step outside their inner circles and meet others, and are breeding grounds for chat, serendipity, and a sense of community. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg argued that their decline makes city dwellers lonelier and communities weaker, so rebuilding them matters for urban quality of life.

Why does the same disaster often strike different groups with highly unequal losses?
Disaster sociology stresses that vulnerability is socially manufactured: housing quality, residential location, access to insurance, and channels of political voice are all distributed by class. Low-income households are likelier to live in floodplains or aging buildings and have weaker capacity to claim relief and reconstruction resources afterward, so casualties and losses concentrate among them. Treating disasters as purely natural conceals these changeable human causes.

What does bowling alone mean — do fading clubs explain modern loneliness?
Putnam spotted a paradox: bowling hit record highs while leagues halved — people still played but stopped associating. Aggregating decades of data, he documented sweeping declines in US communal participation (churches, unions, PTAs, clubs) since the 1960s, weighing rival explanations such as sprawl, time pressure and television — TV and generational change weigh heaviest. Social capital thinned on both faces: bridging ties (weak links carrying opportunity) and bonding ties (strong links giving support), feeding falling trust, weaker civic life and a loneliness epidemic. Whether digital connection refills the tank remains contested — can online bonds generate offline obligations? That decides whether this is media change or community crisis.
