Many languages are dying out. Why, and should we try to save them?

Languages die as their speakers drift away: economic, educational, and media pressure pulls the young toward dominant languages, parents stop passing the minority tongue on, and once intergenerational transmission breaks, the language fades. Many of the world's roughly 7,000 languages now have only a few thousand or a few hundred elderly speakers. Languages carry unique knowledge, such as herbal, astronomical, and ecological knowledge, and cultural memory, and loss is often irreversible. That's why the UN marks February 21 as International Mother Language Day, promoting bilingual education, documentation, and community transmission; yet a language is really saved by being useful and valued, not by force.

What does Philippe Aries mean by the forbidden death, and why did modern society move dying and mourning into hospitals and private life?

Philippe Aries documented how mid-twentieth-century Western societies produced the forbidden death: dying was relocated from the household into hospitals under medical control, mourning rites shrank, and mentioning death came to seem almost indecent. He linked this shift to rising individualism, the medicalization of life's end, and public unfamiliarity with death once mortality fell. Death ceased to be a public event staged by the community, becoming instead a technical matter sequestered inside institutions, while grief was confined to private life.

What are the “awareness contexts” identified by Glaser and Strauss, and how do they shape care and communication with dying patients?

In hospital fieldwork reported in Awareness of Dying (1965), Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss called the state of knowledge about approaching death held by patients, families and staff an “awareness context”, distinguishing closed, suspected, mutual pretense and open types. Which context obtains determines who may speak of dying, how nurses organize care and how relatives communicate. The study thus presented end-of-life care as a negotiated interactional order, laying the foundation of qualitative research in the sociology of death.

Why can one person feel attached to several cultures at the same time?

Because cultural belonging isn't a multiple-choice question. Children of immigrant families speak both languages and celebrate both sets of holidays; identities stack rather than exclude. Growing mobility makes cross-cultural lives common, and research suggests hybrid identity can bring adaptability and creativity, though sometimes with a pull of belonging. Identity is contextual; there's no need to force a single choice.

Do traditional customs and modern life have to conflict?

Not necessarily. Sociological research finds many traditions survive and renew themselves amid modernization: festivals merge with commerce, folk dress enters fashion, and customs become tourism and cultural-creative resources. Real conflicts do occur when customs clash with modern values like equality and individual rights. Societies usually creatively transform traditions, reinterpreting them so they stay meaningful under new conditions.

How does a person's "identity" take shape?

Identity answers the question of who I am, spanning nationality, ethnicity, gender, occupation, faith, and more. It's shaped by family and socialization: language, customs, education, and shared experience place us in groups, while others' perceptions shape our self-image. Identity isn't single and fixed; it's multiple and dynamic, with different facets coming to the fore in different settings.

Does cultural globalization make the world more similar or more diverse?

Both forces are at work at once. Hollywood films, pop music, fast food, and global brands give young people everywhere many shared symbols, the homogenizing side. But regions adapt imported culture locally, such as turning Western ingredients into local dishes, and local cultures gain global audiences online, so cultural combinations multiply. Scholars describe this as hybridization: convergence and creativity intertwined.
