How does algorithmic bias produce systemic discrimination in credit scoring, and what are its mechanisms and mitigation paths?

When training data reflect historical discrimination, say lower approval rates for minorities, the model learns proxies such as zip code that encode protected attributes and mistakes correlation for approval criteria. Mitigation requires bias audits, fairness constraints, and human review at critical decisions.

How do platform-antitrust 'gatekeeper' rules work, and how do they differ from traditional antitrust?

The EU Digital Markets Act designates dominant core platforms as 'gatekeepers' and imposes ex ante duties such as interoperability and data portability, without waiting to prove harm after the fact. It shifts regulation from behavioral remedies to structural prevention.

How do algorithms restructure the labor process and autonomy of gig workers in the platform economy?

Algorithms shift managerial authority from bureaucratic organizations into dispatching, rating, and dynamic-pricing systems, so workers who nominally choose their own hours remain governed by opaque rules. Platforms deliberately preserve information asymmetry, for instance by withholding pricing and dispatch logic, to weaken bargaining power and intensify competition. Gamified tiers, bonuses, and order-streak tasks turn higher work intensity into self-driven exploitation.

What is the 'echo chamber' effect, and how do algorithms reinforce it?

The echo chamber effect describes being enclosed in information that merely echoes one's own views, with little exposure to dissent. Personalization feeds homogeneous content to maximize engagement, entrenching polarization and misbelief.

How does the social-protection gap for gig-economy workers typically arise?

Platforms classify workers as independent contractors, excluding them from employer-funded social insurance and injury schemes and removing a stable contribution base. Opaque algorithmic dispatch and income volatility also lower their ability to self-insure, weakening protection further.

What is the digital divide, and how does it deepen existing social inequality?

The digital divide is the gap between groups in access to, use of, and benefits from digital technology, spanning access, skills, and outcomes. As education, employment, and public services move online, those lacking digital capability fall further behind in opportunity.

Why is informed consent on digital platforms so hard to achieve in practice?

Lengthy privacy policies, pre-ticked boxes, and take-it-or-leave-it choices turn consent into a formality rather than real authorization. When users have no viable alternative, consent lacks voluntariness and fails as an exercise of rights.

What is algorithmic recommendation, and how do digital platforms typically use it to shape users' information access?

Algorithmic recommendation uses behavioral data such as clicks, dwell time, and likes to train models that predict and surface the content most likely to capture attention. Platforms use it to increase engagement and ad revenue, but it can also trap individuals within information streams that confirm their existing preferences.

What are data rights, and what entitlements do individuals typically hold over their digital data?

Data rights refer to individuals' entitlements to control and benefit from data collected, stored, and processed about them, typically including the right to be informed, to access, to rectify, and to be forgotten. The EU's General Data Protection Regulation codifies these rights and makes consent the basis for processing.

How does algorithmic management change gig workers' experience of work and their bargaining power?

Ride-hailing and delivery platforms exert real-time control over the labor process through algorithmic dispatch, dynamic pricing, and rating systems, which scholars call algorithmic management. This design transfers managerial costs onto workers who enjoy nominal schedule freedom yet face volatile earnings, extended hours, and unilateral account deactivation. Because gig workers are dispersed and usually classified as contractors rather than employees, standard union models transfer poorly, and workers lean on online communities and collective legal action instead.
