What structural barriers does “educational equity” face?

Educational equity seeks equal opportunity regardless of background, but urban–rural resource gaps, family capital, and household registration create structural barriers. Early disadvantage is amplified through extracurricular spending and networks, passing across generations. Compensatory funding and fair admissions are seen as key remedies.

How is the “return to education” measured?

The return to education is usually expressed as the income gain from one extra year of schooling, estimated with models like the Mincer earnings equation. It helps individuals decide whether more study pays off and lets governments assess education investment. But returns vary widely by gender, region, and field.

How did Friedman's 'school voucher' idea use market competition to improve schools?

Why does education reduce poverty?

Education reduces poverty by raising people's productivity and employability, opening access to better-paid work. Better-educated people tend to be healthier, make sounder financial and parenting choices, and engage more in civic life. Education also breaks the intergenerational transmission of poverty, giving the next generation a higher starting point.

How does Becker's 'human capital' theory treat education as an economic investment?

What is core to Montessori education?

Montessori treats the child as the agent of his or her own development, so the adult's work moves from lecturing to the environment: materials in graded series that display their own errors, letting a child choose and handle them, finding the rule in the object rather than in a score, while the teacher watches and demonstrates. Mixed-age groups let the younger watch and the older consolidate by doing it again, so social learning arises inside the group. Her warrant is the "absorbing mind" and sensitive periods, which make intrinsic motivation sounder than praise and punishment. Freedom here is not permissiveness: the materials come with limits, and a quiet teacher presupposes a painstakingly prepared setting.

What does the Montessori method emphasize?

Why do children tend to 'forget' some of what they learned after a long school break?

Studies find that after long breaks like summer vacation, students' reading and math scores tend to drop—and more so for low-income children—a pattern called 'summer learning loss.' It shows learning needs steady practice; without use, knowledge slowly fades.
