After industrialization the large stem household faded while the nuclear family spread—how did Talcott Parsons explain this transformation?
Through structural differentiation: industrialization stripped the family of most inherited functions, and the small household proved best fitted to what remained. Production moved into factories, schooling into schools, relief into government agencies, so the large kinship community dissolved once its functions were taken away. The family kept two core tasks—primary socialization of children and emotional stabilization of adults—and a small, mobile nuclear unit could follow jobs through the labor market. Hence for Parsons the spread of the nuclear family was not decay but functional adaptation to industrial society.

When both spouses work full-time, why does the housework and childcare after hours still land mainly on mothers?
Gender beliefs lag behind employment structures—what Arlie Hochschild called a stalled revolution. Women entered paid work en masse, but the cultural script governing housework stayed old, and the default of men outside, women inside kept running. Many wives lowered their own standards to spare their husband's feelings, while husbands chipped in selectively as helpers rather than partners. Following dual-earner couples over time, she reckoned that employed mothers did roughly an extra month of round-the-clock housework a year—the second shift—paid for in chronic fatigue and simmering resentment.

Noticing that many full-time working wives still shouldered all the housework and childcare after coming home, what did Arlie Hochschild name this phenomenon?
She named it the second shift: the unpaid housework and caregiving women performed at home after their paid day ended. Husbands headed for leisure while wives began the day's second job, because gender ideology lagged behind employment structure—spouses bargained over chores armed with deeply held beliefs about proper roles, turning the division of labor into a ledger measuring love and gratitude. Workplaces meanwhile presumed someone was always home, so family-friendly arrangements were mostly claimed by men, and the shortfall was covered out of women's leisure.

Noticing that the norms governing how spouses ought to behave were losing their grip, what did Andrew Cherlin name this trend in American family life?
He named it the deinstitutionalization of marriage. Marriage once carried a clear rulebook for spouses' roles and life courses—when to wed, who owes what afterward. As cohabitation spread, divorce grew routine, and childbearing outside wedlock became common, marriage turned from a near-obligatory institution into an optional relationship project couples define for themselves, and the old shared script lost its force. Americans still marry and even splurge on weddings, yet what marriage signifies has shifted from economic partnership and adult status toward companionship and self-fulfillment.
