What is the “demographic dividend” and why does it fade?
The dividend is extra growth when the working-age share is high and dependency low. As fertility falls and aging rises, the window closes and turns into an aging burden.

Why is “taking the mother’s surname” more discussed lately?
Traditionally children take the father’s surname, reflecting patriarchy; debate on maternal surnames shows rising gender equality and family negotiation. Law allows either parent’s surname as a family choice.

Why do many countries’ pro-birth policies have limited effect?
Birth choices are shaped by child-rearing cost, women’s employment, housing, and education pressure; subsidies rarely offset opportunity cost. The ideal shifted from “more children, more blessing” to “fewer, better cared-for.”

Why are “nuclear families” (parents and children) now more common than extended families?
Urbanization, mobility, and individualism lead young people to live independently, reducing three-generation households. Nuclear families are flexible but weaken family mutual-aid networks.

Why is grandparent childcare common in many families?
Dual-income families face high childcare cost and short supply, so grandparents help cheaply and out of kinship. But it can spark intergenerational clashes and burden the elderly.
