Why does an address have to be written in so much detail?

An address works like nested drawers, moving from country and city down to street and house number, narrowing the area step by step. The clearer it is, the less likely letters and parcels go to the wrong place.

Why is north usually at the top of a map?

It is a long-standing agreement among mapmakers so that everyone reads maps the same way. A compass needle points north, so north at the top makes it easy to line the map up with real directions.

What is a map?

A map is a drawing of a place as if you looked down on it from high in the sky. Looking at a map shows you which way the park and your home are.

Why do letters need a postal code?

A postal code uses a few digits to stand for a small area, so a machine can tell at once where a letter should go. That is much faster than reading a long address and makes fewer mistakes.

Why are many big cities built beside rivers or the sea?

Rivers and harbours supply drinking water and irrigation, and they let boats carry goods in and out. Where transport is easy, business thrives and people gradually gather into large cities.

Why are shapes a little distorted on a flat map?

Earth is a sphere, and flattening a curved surface always means stretching or squeezing some parts. So every mapping method trades something off, keeping shapes accurate while giving up area, or the other way round.

What is the scale on a map for?

What kind of city is a capital?

A capital is the city where a country places its main government offices, and important meetings and official visits usually happen there. It is not necessarily the largest or richest city in the country.

Why does a home have a house number?

How does phone navigation know where I am?

A set of navigation satellites in space constantly broadcasts time-stamped signals, and a phone compares the arrival times of signals from several of them. Turning those tiny time differences into distances lets it work out where you are.

What are the lines of longitude and latitude on a map for?

These lines weave a grid so that any point on Earth can be described exactly with two numbers. Ship captains, pilots, and navigation apps use those coordinates to say precisely where they are.

Why do streets have names?
