What does the gold standard mean?
The gold standard is a system in which a country's currency is directly linked to a fixed quantity of gold and can be exchanged for gold at a set rate. From the 19th century into the early 20th, many countries adopted it to keep currency stable and trade convenient. Most abandoned it during wars and economic crises.

In 1865 France, Belgium, Italy and others formed the Latin Monetary Union, agreeing on the gold franc as a standard and free cross-border circulation of coins. But members debased silver coins to fund wars, and fluctuating gold–silver ratios destabilized the system. It ultimately dissolved in the 1920s.

Why did the Spanish silver dollar circulate globally for so long?
From the 16th century, Spain mined vast silver in the Americas and minted the eight-real coin, which was accepted across Asia, Europe, and Africa because of its uniform fineness and standard weight, even circulating in Ming–Qing China. It became a common currency of early global trade until national currencies replaced it in the 19th century.

How did the Song dynasty's “cash shortage” arise?
The Song dynasty saw booming commerce and surging demand for copper cash, but copper was short and large amounts were privately minted, melted, or exported, creating an actual shortage known as “qianhuang.” The government tried paper notes and iron coins to ease it, yet triggered new depreciation problems. It reflects tension between money supply and economic growth.

How was the Bretton Woods system established?
In 1944, 44 nations met at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, and created a dollar-centered international monetary system. The dollar was pegged to gold while other currencies pegged to the dollar, and the IMF and World Bank were founded. The system collapsed in 1971 when the U.S. ended dollar convertibility to gold.

What period does “sterling hegemony” refer to?
The 19th century is called the era of “sterling hegemony,” when Britain's industrial and naval dominance made the pound the leading international settlement and reserve currency.
What is seigniorage?
Seigniorage is the profit a currency issuer earns by using its monopoly on issuance to exchange low-cost money for real goods and services. Ancient rulers also profited by debasing coin metal content, while today it mainly appears as the gap between printing cost and face value. It is effectively an invisible tax from the power to issue money.

How does “book money” differ from the cash we use?
Book money is the digital balance in a bank account, used for payments by transfer rather than physical notes, and most modern transactions rely on it. Unlike cash, it is created by commercial banks on the basis of credit and cannot be directly controlled in total by the central bank. The spread of electronic payments made it the daily norm.

What is “bad money drives out good”?
This is the popular phrasing of Gresham's law: when two coins of different fineness circulate at equal legal value, people hoard the full-weight “good” money and spend the debased “bad” money, so good money leaves circulation. It shows that fixed official ratios often contradict market choice, and it was common under bimetallism.

Why did the Weimar Republic suffer hyperinflation?
After World War I, Germany faced huge reparations and printed vast amounts of money to cover spending and debt. The money supply exploded while goods stayed scarce, causing the mark to collapse and prices to spiral out of control in 1923. Hyperinflation wiped out middle-class savings and eroded social trust.

How did the Roman 'denarius' silver coin's repeated debasement help accelerate the empire's crisis?
Starting with Nero, Rome steadily lowered the silver content of the denarius until the third-century crisis left it essentially copper-clad. Debasement drove prices up and undermined the credibility of taxes and soldiers' pay, which many economic historians see as fueling the empire's fiscal and political collapse.

Long ago, why did people use little wooden sticks as 'money'?
In England centuries ago, the king's tax officers notched sticks to record debts and taxes, then split each stick in two so both sides kept a matching half as proof. Called a 'tally stick,' it was hard to fake and easy to check, so people used it as a record for paying money back.

Why could shells be used as money in ancient times?
Shells served as money in many early societies because they were rare, durable, portable, and easy to count. In inland areas where sea shells were scarce, they became a widely accepted medium of exchange. They gradually disappeared from circulation once metal coins emerged.

Where did the world's earliest paper money appear?
The world's earliest paper money was the “jiaozi” issued in Sichuan during China's Northern Song dynasty. Because iron coins were heavy and awkward for trade, merchants in the early 11th century invented exchangeable notes backed by metal currency, later formally issued by the government. Jiaozi predated European paper money by roughly 600 years.

Why did many ancient coins have a square hole in the center?
China's round coins with a square hole were used for over two thousand years from the Qin dynasty; the circle symbolized heaven and the square earth, and the hole let coins be strung on cords for carrying and counting. The square hole also let workers fix coins on a rod while filing them, improving efficiency. The design blended craft and culture.
