How does quantitative easing work?

The central bank buys large-scale assets like government bonds to inject reserves, lowering long-term rates and encouraging lending, typically when standard rate cuts are exhausted.

Why can the central bank "create" money while ordinary people and commercial banks can't just print it?

Money is a product of modern credit. The central bank monopolizes cash issuance and steers the monetary base, while commercial banks create deposit money through lending; but all of this rests on law and regulation: the central bank sustains trust in the currency, banks face reserve requirements, and law ensures the money is accepted. If everyone could print, the currency would depreciate fast and collapse. Central banks don't create money without limits either; they must defend price and financial stability, since over-issuance brings hyperinflation.

Why can even a sound bank be destroyed by a run, and how does deposit insurance change the logic?

Banks fund long-term loans with demand deposits that can be withdrawn anytime—an inherent maturity mismatch; if depositors all withdraw at once, even a solvent bank must fire-sell assets, creating a self-fulfilling run. Deposit insurance removes the incentive to run by government guarantee of deposits up to a limit—which is why the US created the FDIC after the Great Depression. But insurance weakens depositor monitoring, inviting riskier behavior—moral hazard—so it must be paired with capital requirements, supervision, and payout limits. Institutional design is a perpetual trade-off between stability and incentives.

In the 2008 global financial crisis, how did the chain “subprime mortgages → securitization → shadow banking” amplify the shock?

Low rates and rising house prices fueled a subprime surge; banks bundled mortgages into MBS/CDOs to offload risk and recycle funds into more lending. Securitization stacked risks and inflated ratings; investors and institutions held these securities funded by short-term repos at high leverage. When prices peaked and fell, defaults rose, securities collapsed, and the shadow-banking system dependent on short funding faced a run-like deleveraging—forced selling created a price spiral. Lehman's failure ignited counterparty panic, credit froze, and the crisis spread from finance to the real economy. Regulatory gaps—low capital requirements, off-balance-sheet vehicles, reliance on credit-rating agencies—were the institutional amplifiers.

What is “shadow banking,” and why does it both complement and threaten the traditional banking system?

Shadow banking refers to institutions and activities that perform maturity, liquidity, and credit intermediation outside the regulated banking system—money-market funds, hedge funds, securitization conduits, and peer-to-peer lending. They bypass capital-requirement rules, offer cheaper funding, and channel savings into riskier, higher-return uses, complementing credit supply; but maturity mismatch (funding long assets with short money) makes them vulnerable to runs in a panic, and stress can spill over to regulated banks—the securitization chain was a trigger in 2008.

When prices rise, why do we say "money is worth less"?

Money's value shows mainly in purchasing power, how much a given sum can buy. Inflation makes that same sum buy less, so purchasing power falls and money is worth less. Savings and fixed salaries don't automatically track prices, so real purchasing power is quietly eroded, which is why people watch inflation and look for ways to preserve value when it runs high.

What is purchasing power parity, and why does it explain some exchange-rate movements yet often fail?

Purchasing power parity (PPP) holds that the same basket of goods should cost the same across countries once converted at the exchange rate, because arbitrageurs buy low and sell high (the law of one price). Over the long run, high-inflation currencies tend to depreciate, so the direction broadly holds. But PPP assumes goods are freely tradable; services, housing, and other non-tradables differ hugely in price, and trade barriers and transport costs push exchange rates far from PPP in the short run.

How does systemic risk differ from ordinary risk, and why doesn't each bank's soundness guarantee the system's soundness?

Ordinary risk is loss risk at a single institution, manageable through diversification; systemic risk is the danger that one institution's or market's failure topples the whole system through contagion. Interbank lending, common asset holdings, payment chains, and confidence spillovers entangle risks—each bank may look sound, yet if all rely on the same funding or assets, they are collectively fragile. Also, in a crisis each institution rationally selling assets to protect itself pushes prices down and worsens everyone's position. Macroprudential regulation (stress tests, countercyclical capital, leverage limits) therefore targets the system, not individual firms.

What is inflation — why did fifty-cent popsicles cost three yuan now?

Mild inflation is economic normal: money supply grows, wages and prices spiral gently, cash slowly buys less. Moderate inflation encourages spending and investing, but hyperinflation (prices multiplying hundredfold yearly in some histories) wrecks order. New Year money parked idle quietly loses purchasing power — lesson one of financial literacy: make money hold or grow value.

Money works because everyone trusts that its amount is limited and that a country issues it in one official way. If anyone could print it, there would be so much that nobody would accept it, and prices would fall into chaos.

How does insurance work?

Many people each pay a small amount into one shared pool of money. If someone is unlucky and faces an accident such as illness or a fire, money from the pool helps them get through it.

How does money pay from a phone when I see no coins?

Your phone keeps a digital ledger: paying tells the bank move ten yuan from me to the shop; the bank checks then edits two lines — yours minus ten, theirs plus ten. Money never flies away; only ledger lines change. Guard your password well — it is the ledger key.
