How does “push-pull theory” explain migration?

Push-pull theory holds that unfavorable conditions at the origin (poverty, war) “push” people out while opportunities at the destination (jobs, freedom) “pull” them in, mediated by distance and policy barriers. It is the classic framework for explaining migration, though it underplays subjective networks and culture. It remains widely used in migration studies.

How does the household registration system affect migration?

The household registration system classifies residents as agricultural or non-agricultural and ties public services like education and health to it, so cross-regional migrants often cannot access benefits equally. It strictly limited city entry in the planned-economy era and later eased. Reforming it is seen as key to fair mobility.

Why does low fertility appear in the later stage of demographic transition theory?

With urbanization, higher female education and employment, and rising child-rearing costs, families prefer fewer, better-cared-for children, pushing fertility below replacement—the “second demographic transition.” Individualism and later marriage also weaken traditional motives to have children. This stage has persisted for decades in many developed countries.

What does “demographic dividend” mean?

The demographic dividend refers to a period when the working-age share is high and dependency burden is low, boosting production and savings and aiding growth. It does not happen automatically; it needs enough jobs and education. After the dividend passes, aging challenges often arrive.

What is a refugee, and how does it differ from an economic migrant?

A refugee is someone with well-founded fear of persecution or war who cannot return home, protected by international law with specific rights. An economic migrant moves mainly to improve life and usually lacks that protection. The distinction matters for the legality of deportation and asylum policy.

After the Opium Wars, large numbers of Chinese laborers went as contract workers to mines, railways, and plantations in Southeast Asia, the Americas, and Australia. They filled labor shortages in colonial development but often faced discrimination and harsh treatment. Many overseas Chinese communities today trace back to them.

Why did the Irish Famine trigger mass emigration?

From 1845 a potato blight caused the Irish Famine, killing huge numbers of poor people who relied on that single staple. Survivors fled to the Americas and Britain, with millions leaving over just a few decades. It profoundly changed Ireland's population structure and shaped overseas Irish communities.

How did West Germany's post-war 'guest worker' (Gastarbeiter) program shape today's migration structure?

From 1955 West Germany signed recruitment treaties with Turkey, Italy, and others to bring in 'guest workers' seen as temporary fillers of factory jobs. Many stayed and later reunited families, turning Germany from temporary labor import into a lasting, diverse immigration society.

How hard did the Black Death hit Europe's population?

The mid-14th-century Black Death killed roughly one-third to half of Europe's population within a few years. The sudden labor shortage raised wages, weakened feudal serfdom, and indirectly spurred socioeconomic change. It was a major turning point in medieval population history.

What phenomenon does “population explosion” describe?

Population explosion describes a situation, especially in the 20th century, where death rates fell fast while birth rates stayed high, causing sharp short-term growth. It sparked fears about resources and food, such as “Malthusian panic.” As education and urbanization spread, many countries later fell back naturally.
