How does religious economies theory explain the sharp contrast in religious participation between the United States and Western Europe?

Stark and Finke treat religious bodies as suppliers in a competitive market: where regulation is light and denominations abound, groups must improve preaching, community bonds, and services to attract adherents, lifting aggregate participation; monopoly churches breed complacent supply and low attendance. On this view American devoutness and European apathy reflect institutional environments rather than modernity eroding belief. Critics counter that Scandinavia allows competition yet stays secular, so demand-side factors cannot be omitted.

How did Bellah discern an American civil religion within presidential inaugurals, and where does its boundary with denominational faith and personal piety run?

Reading Kennedy's inaugural alongside other public texts, Bellah found biblical imagery of God, destiny, sacrifice, and final judgment recurring apart from any denomination, supplying transcendental reference points for political choice. These symbols belong to no church creed and differ from private devotion, operating instead on the civic stage of ceremony and oratory, where they confer sacred legitimacy on authority. The essay ignited lasting debate over whether such religion feeds national self-righteousness and where church-state separation should run.

What does Bellah designate as America's civil religion, and in what substantive ways does it differ from denominational church religion?

Bellah discerned a public creed whose canon consists of founding documents and whose sacred narrative moves from independence through civil war. Attached to no denomination, it voices the community's collective self-understanding during inaugurations, war memorials, and similar national rites. The contrast is sharp: membership in civil religion coincides with citizenship, and its sanctuary is the public sphere rather than the chapel.

Science keeps advancing — why hasnt religion vanished as nineteenth-century thinkers predicted?

Secularization theory predicted modernity would dilute religion, but late-twentieth-century data embarrassed it: global religiosity rose rather than fell, America stayed devout while Europe secularized sharply. Norris and Ingleharts existential security thesis explains this: religion supplies meaning and reassurance against uncertainty and want, so societies with strong welfare states, small gaps and personal safety cool off naturally, whereas wherever survival anxiety runs high, faith thrives regardless of technology. Religion is thus not an obsolete artifact defeated by science but a deep demand rising and falling with existential conditions — and it keeps reinventing its forms.
