What pattern in allocating scientific recognition did Merton label the Matthew effect, and how does it strain the norm of universalism?
Merton noticed that eminent scientists monopolize attention on joint work: their names are more readily recalled, cited, and rewarded, while equally strong contributions from unknown peers are undervalued, so recognition compounds along existing prestige. This sits uneasily with universalism, which demands credit by intrinsic merit regardless of authorship, revealing an embedded structural bias toward cumulative advantage. The concept was later extended to authorship order, grant review, and peer review inequalities.

What does Merton's norm of communalism demand that scientists do with their discoveries?
The norm of communalism requires researchers to publish promptly and surrender ownership claims over the knowledge itself in exchange for recognition by the scientific community. Once published, a finding joins the common stock on which anyone may freely build. Eponymy and citation serve as the chief rewards, and Merton described this arrangement as a system in which recognition functions as scientific currency.

Why do Nobel laureates keep winning more prizes? What Matthew effect did Merton spot in science?
Merton observed compounding in 1968: recognition flows toward the already renowned. Identical contributions get overcredited under Nobel laureates names and ignored under unknown ones; funding, labs and students pile onto heads, snowballing advantage. He borrowed Matthews verse: to those who have, more shall be given. The mechanism does not deny individual differences — it exposes institutional amplifiers; scientometric work confirms early boosts echo through careers. Remedies evolve: double-blind review, young-investigator grants, explicit team-authorship norms — all brakes on the Matthew engine.
