In the Chicago neighborhood studies, which trait predicted differences in violent crime better than poverty itself?

Collective efficacy: neighbors' social cohesion combined with their willingness to intervene for public order. The Chicago project measured more than eight thousand residents across 343 neighborhood clusters; statistically controlling poverty rates, ethnic composition, and residential turnover, communities where residents knew and trusted one another and stepped in against teenage misbehavior showed markedly lower homicide and violence. Adults watching the streets together and stopping graffiti and harassment early kept minor disorder from snowballing into a criminal culture. Poverty supplies motives; collective efficacy decides whether motives become offenses.

Wilson and Kelling watched a single unrepaired broken window seem to drag a whole street into decline—what is the core claim of their broken-windows theory?

Minor disorder, left alone, ripens into serious crime, so policing must act early. A broken window tells passersby that nobody here cares and nobody is in charge; fear pulls law-abiding residents off the street, informal surveillance slackens, and would-be offenders read a license to misbehave as the neighborhood slides down a spiral of decline. Policy should therefore repair the environment promptly and check small offenses like graffiti and fare evasion, rebuilding residents' confidence that order can be expected before scattered mess hardens into fertile ground for felony.

In parts of inner-city Philadelphia, why do teenagers—even essentially decent kids—feel compelled to wear a tough, untouchable front? What concept did Elijah Anderson use to explain this?

Through the code of the street: where formal authority fails, commanding respect becomes survival equipment. Police protection feels distant and unreliable, so teenagers assume that whoever looks easy to prey upon gets picked first; they build deterrence through dress, speech, eye contact, even preemptive shows of force, determined never to be taken for soft targets. Those same face-saving rules raise the odds that minor disputes escalate, locking the block into a vicious cycle. Anderson stresses that most households remain decent ones raising children right—the code is a survival adaptation to desperate conditions, not the community's native values.
