What does the “urban hierarchy” refer to?
The urban hierarchy describes cities in a region arranged like a pyramid by population, economic function, and sphere of influence: a few large cities at the top, many small towns at the bottom. Central-place theory explains why each level's service radius and number follow patterns. It helps understand the macro layout of resources and population.

What is a “city cluster”?
A city cluster is a group of neighboring cities with close economic ties and shared infrastructure, such as the Yangtze Delta or Pearl River Delta. It breaks single-city boundaries to form a regionally networked division of labor. City clusters have become key spatial units for national competition globally.

What did Howard's “garden city” idea aim to solve?
At the end of the 19th century Howard proposed the garden city: small towns of limited size balancing homes, factories, and farmland, separated by green belts to avoid London-style crowding and pollution. It influenced modern satellite and new-town planning. Its core was using planning to balance efficiency and quality of life.

Why did the Industrial Revolution make cities swell rapidly?
Factories clustered around cities and needed large labor forces, so peasants left the land for urban work and city populations surged in a short time. Railways and steam power reinforced the agglomeration effect of cities. This produced early “urban diseases” like crowded housing and poor sanitation.

How do “urban villages” form?
Urban villages are former villages engulfed by city expansion, where land is enclosed but collective household registration and self-built low-rise housing remain. Because rents are low, they become main foothold for migrant workers. They reflect the mismatch between planning and reality in rapid urbanization.

Why did early urbanization often coincide with epidemics?
Sudden population density with lagging water and sewage systems made cities ideal for spreading cholera, plague, and similar diseases. 19th-century European cities saw repeated outbreaks due to poor sanitation. Modern sewers and public health systems were built precisely to address this.

What does the “compact city” concept advocate?
The compact city advocates high density, mixed land use, and priority public transit to shorten travel, save land, and cut emissions. It opposes disorderly sprawl and emphasizes walkable living circles. Many European cities adopt it as a sustainable development direction.

Why can Tokyo hold such a huge population?
The Tokyo metropolis organizes tens of millions through a dense rail network, tiered urban division of labor, and highly intensive land use. An efficient commute lets far-suburban residents work in the city center easily. It is a classic case of managing a megacity.

What does “counter-urbanization” mean?
Counter-urbanization means population flowing back from cities to suburbs or small towns, with city-center growth slowing or even shrinking. It is common in developed countries, driven by better transport, high central-city costs, and changing lifestyle preferences. Opposite to urbanization, it is the next phase of city dispersal.

What is a slum?
A slum is a low-income settlement in a city with crude housing, poor infrastructure, and high density, often appearing where rapid urbanization outpaces housing supply. Residents usually do informal work and lack secure property rights. Upgrading slums is a major issue in global urban development.

In which city did the metro first appear?
The world's first metro was London's Metropolitan Railway, opened in 1863 with steam locomotives running underground to ease surface congestion. It pioneered using rail transit to relieve city traffic. Today the metro is the backbone of public transport in many metropolises.
