What is a Riemannian manifold, and what role does the metric tensor play in it?

A Riemannian manifold is a smooth manifold equipped at each tangent space with a positive-definite inner product, the metric tensor $g_{ij}$. The metric defines local lengths, angles, and volumes, enabling the computation of geodesics, curvature, and other geometric quantities, extending calculus to curved spaces.

State the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and explain how it connects the local geometry of a surface with its global topology.

For a compact oriented surface M the Gauss-Bonnet formula reads $\int_M K\,dA=2\pi\chi(M)$, where $\chi$ is the Euler characteristic. It shows the integral of Gaussian curvature depends only on the topological invariant $\chi$, not on the metric: total positive curvature is fixed by the number of holes, e.g. the sphere has $\chi=2$ and total curvature $4\pi$.

A sphere has constant positive Gaussian curvature while a saddle surface is negatively curved everywhere; why does this sign difference manifest itself in the angle sums of geodesic triangles?

Gaussian curvature governs the angular excess or defect of geodesic triangles: on a unit sphere the interior angles sum to more than π with the excess equal to the area, while on a negatively curved surface they sum to less than π. By the Theorema Egregium this curvature is intrinsic, independent of how the surface sits in ambient space, so a two-dimensional observer confined to the surface can measure it from angles and areas alone. This is exactly what the Gauss-Bonnet formula makes quantitative.

What is Gaussian curvature, and why is the Gaussian curvature at every point of a sphere positive?

Gaussian curvature is the product of the two principal curvatures at a point, $K=\kappa_1\kappa_2$. For a sphere of radius R both principal curvatures equal $1/R$, so $K=1/R^2>0$, meaning the sphere bends the same way in all directions and is locally positively curved.

What is a manifold, and why is Earth's surface often modeled as a two-dimensional manifold?

A manifold is a topological space locally homeomorphic to Euclidean space, described near each point by coordinate charts. Earth's surface looks flat locally (over small regions) and can be given latitude-longitude coordinates, yet cannot be flattened globally, so it is a two-dimensional manifold rather than Euclidean 2-space.

Why do saddle-shaped (hyperbolic paraboloid) potato chips snap so crisply?

Its two principal curvatures point opposite ways (one positive, one negative), creating two-way stiffness that resists bending and tends to fracture, giving a crisp snap. A neat use of negative Gaussian curvature.

What is Ricci flow, and what role did it play in the proof of the Poincaré conjecture?

Ricci flow is the evolution equation $\partial_t g_{ij}=-2R_{ij}$ introduced by Hamilton, letting the metric evolve to smooth out curvature, analogous to heat diffusion. Perelman used Ricci flow with surgery to prove that a simply connected closed 3-manifold is homeomorphic to the 3-sphere, resolving the Poincaré conjecture; the work appeared on arXiv and was verified by the community.

What is curvature, and how does it measure bending for a plane curve?

For a plane curve curvature $\kappa$ measures how fast the tangent direction changes per unit arc length, $\kappa=|d\mathbf{T}/ds|$. A straight line has curvature 0, while a circle of radius R has curvature $1/R$: smaller radius means sharper bending. Curvature quantifies deviation from a straight line.

What is sectional curvature, and how does it characterize the geometry of a Riemannian manifold?

Sectional curvature is the Gaussian curvature of the two-dimensional tangent plane spanned by any pair of linearly independent tangent vectors in a Riemannian manifold. Spaces of constant sectional curvature fall into three types: positive (sphere, triangle angle sum $>\pi$), zero (Euclidean), and negative (hyperbolic, sum $<\pi$), governing the local behavior of triangles and parallels.

What is a geodesic, and what is the shortest path between two points on a sphere?

A geodesic is a curve on a surface that is locally length-minimizing, generalizing the notion of a straight line. On a sphere the geodesics are arcs of great circles (intersections of the sphere with planes through its center), so the shortest flight between two points on Earth follows a great circle rather than a line of constant longitude.

Slit a cylinder along a ruling and unroll it, and you obtain a flat patch with zero stretching throughout. Why do these two surfaces, seemingly curved to different degrees, count as locally identical, and what part does the first fundamental form play?

The first fundamental form I = E du^2 + 2F du dv + G dv^2 records only the lengths, angles, and areas measured along the surface itself, entirely indifferent to how the surface bends in the surrounding space. Parametrize the cylinder as r(u,v) = (cos u, sin u, v); direct computation gives E = G = 1 and F = 0, matching the planar Cartesian metric pointwise, so the unrolling map preserves every intrinsic quantity and is a genuine isometry. Gauss's Theorema Egregium states that Gaussian curvature depends solely on the first fundamental form, and both the cylinder and the plane carry identically zero curvature — the exact reason no intrinsic experiment can tell them apart locally.
